The Cassette Years Vol. 4

The last Cassette Years post was way back in August so it’s about time for a new one!
This is a classic hip-hop track by Naughty By Nature that you no doubt already know very well. They really don’t make them like they used to.
Naughty By Nature -- Hip Hop Hooray -- ![]()
Hip-Hop was way more positive back in the 90’s -- rappers like A Tribe Called Quest, Biz Markie, Souls of Mischief and others bought everyone together and kept their beef off the mic -- nowadays the rap chart makes me puke a bit in my mouth.

Note the line -- ”I think I might hijack a plane’ -- wasn’t controversial at all back then!
The Cassette Years Vol. 3

Channel 4 had White Men Can’t Jump on late last week and it’s got a classic hip-hop soundtrack. I remember watching this film when I was seriously young and my dad covering my eyes during that shower scene with Harrelson and Perez.
As soon as I heard this song I knew it would be the next song in the Cassette Years series. Which I’m starting to really enjoy now.
Main Source didn’t get past one album -- a damn shame but they left the game with one of hip-hops all-time classics.
The lyrics have more meaning today than ever before. They apply to almost every urban artist newbie in the charts.

The Cassette Years Vol. 2

Hands up who remembers and misses garage music (as long as it was good, none of that So Solid crap).
While the majority of it originated here in the UK, there were a few artists that came from across the water and one artist that was responsible for a huge garage classic was Roy Davis Jr.
Primarily a house artist, Roy put through this garage tune and every pirate radio station had it playing for years. A few of you may still have this on cassette!

The Cassette Years Vol. 1

There’s nothing better than to reminisce on quality old school hip-hop and I’m proud to introduce a new editorial spot. The Cassette Years will feature the best in classic cassette music of all genres and become a regular feature to TMB.
In the digital storm, some of the best music can be lost in the huge ocean of availability and choice but we’re going to turn the clocks back and jog your memories.
Both The Pharcyde and Souls of Mischief hail from California and came out in the early nineties during the Tupac and Biggie era but there’s something significantly different about this rap music. It’s gentle, easy, relaxing and makes the darkest areas of LA seem inviting (not going pack my bags and go to South Central though).
