Ghost Society

There’s no better feeling of hearing a track and switching the repeat button on before it’s even finished. That kind of power with something as simple as song is what’s it’s all about and Ghost Society did that to me earlier in the week.
Google should have chosen this dreamy song as they introduced their new cloud-based music service, it’s perfect!
Download the single and watch them perform it live below…

Nathaniel Rateliff
We’ve got a Mahogany Session with this very special man later in the week.
Nathaniel Rateliff – Shroud
Can’t wait to hear it, plus it’s at a little farm in the middle of London so expect sheep and pigs in shot!
Silje Nes
Norway’s Silje Nes is giving the opening track to her upcoming album away for free this month in the run up to it’s release.
It’s a delicate, detailed and intricate arrangement and her vocals add a lovely light atmosphere which is just lovely.

The Mahogany Sessions // Chief

For us, Chief are one of the most exciting bands to emerge over the past year or so. They’re the latest Domino Records signing and definitely a big priority for the Autumn and beyond.
With Santa Monica as their hometown, Chief are representing the true musical roots of the sunshine state – no Botox involved.
The sun was shining during our session with them at Lounge on the Farm festival earlier in the summer and they performed two outstanding unplugged renditions from their upcoming album, Modern Rituals.

Tokyo Police Club

RAC aka Remix Artist Collective have churned out another keeper this week and it’s all for a good cause!
TPC decided to make a real difference with their latest single and if you like it as much as we do, buy it ‘cos it will help animals in need.
Your purchase will include the music video as well as both the RAC and DOM remixes and 100% of each sale will be donated to the ASPCA®.
Founded in 1866, the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) is the first humane organisation established in the Americas and serves as the nation’s leading voice for animal welfare.

Lanterns On The Lake

After a week off from work, I returned to an inbox of 1121 unread emails. Despite being in my early twenties, I could feel a stress related heart-attack approaching or much worse, I could completely lose it and require the skills Michael Clayton to fix the situation.
Just as I’m about to lose it, Hazel Wilde, lead singer of Lanterns on the Lake shares some of the beautiful music her and her fellow bandmates have created with the Mahogany team.
All is now calm.
I’ve yet to find out more information on the group from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne but right now I’m content with just listening to the three stunningly beautiful songs.
Lungs Quicken is due for release on 7th June and will be available via iTunes. For now you can enjoy a preview of it as well as two free downloads courtesy of the band.

Folk Off!

Folk is cool again and has been for quite some time. Or maybe it always was but some of us thought we were too cool for it?
Who knows as long as the music is good and today I’ve got a young man and a young lady both who possess exactly that.
First up is Johnny Flynn who has been on the map of all the UK’s best DJ’s for homegrown talent. The likes of Zane Lowe, John Kennedy and Huw Stephans are all big supporters and so are we. This particular track is from the upcoming album, Been Listening, out on Transgressive Records on 7th June.
As for the young lady, Alessi’s Ark possesses a dreamy voice and a hearty sound that could relax a hungry hyena on the blazing hot serengeti plains. Two new tracks from her – I do think Shovelling could do with being a minute or so longer.

Mahogany Minute with Kyla la Grange
I grew up…in Watford (just outside London) in a house full of South Africans, Zimbabweans and a big hairy alsatian dog.
It all started when…my parents bought me a violin. I hated it and refused to practise, but realised i loved music more than anything. Later on they bought me a guitar instead.
If I’m not playing music you’ll find me…going for a long run or putting on a one-man disco in my room.
I can’t perform unless I have…no shoes on and a glass of whisky.
My three dream festival headliners would be… Cat Power, Bright Eyes and Elliott Smith (it’s a dream so you can bring people back to life).
You’ll always see me wearing…clothes. Unless the day is hot and uninhibited.
I wish I hadn’t…cracked my little brother’s head open on the bathtub when we were little. (He’s ok now).
If there’s one thing I’ve learnt it’s…If you ever see a whole tiramisu left on the side of the road, definitely pick it up and definitely eat it.
Give me 10 minutes and I’ll cook a great…Moussaka. Though actually it takes about 2 hours.
Buy me a drink and I’ll…possibly forget to buy you one later.
I’m not really into Country, but I do like Dolly Parton.
My favourite food is…scrambled eggs and beans on toast.
My favourite smell is…caramelised nuts being roasted. quite specific.
My most recent release is…a free download of Vampire Smile!
