Mahogany Minute with Kyla la Grange

Posted on Monday, March 8, 2010 in Alternative, Indie/Folk, Mahogany Minute

I grew up…in Watford (just outside London) in a house full of South Africans, Zimbabweans and a big hairy alsatian dog.

It all started when…my parents bought me a violin. I hated it and refused to practise, but realised i loved music more than anything. Later on they bought me a guitar instead.

If I’m not playing music you’ll find me…going for a long run or putting on a one-man disco in my room.

I can’t perform unless I have…no shoes on and a glass of whisky.

My three dream festival headliners would be… Cat Power, Bright Eyes and Elliott Smith (it’s a dream so you can bring people back to life).

You’ll always see me wearing…clothes. Unless the day is hot and uninhibited.

I wish I hadn’t…cracked my little brother’s head open on the bathtub when we were little. (He’s ok now).

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt it’s…If you ever see a whole tiramisu left on the side of the road, definitely pick it up and definitely eat it.

Give me 10 minutes and I’ll cook a great…Moussaka. Though actually it takes about 2 hours.

Buy me a drink and I’ll…possibly forget to buy you one later.

I’m not really into Country, but I do like Dolly Parton.

My favourite food is…scrambled eggs and beans on toast.

My favourite smell is…caramelised nuts being roasted. quite specific.

My most recent release is…a free download of Vampire Smile!

Mayday!

Posted on Thursday, February 18, 2010 in Indie/Folk, Remixes

Big fan of UNKLE and Swedish producer Mojib has officially been given the blueprints to Mayday, the 2007 song which features The Duke Spirits lead singer Liela Moss.

Here’s a bit about it from label Bad Panda Records.

”Mayday Revisited” is a one-off single from Swedish music producer Mojib (Staffan Ulmert). The track reconstructs the song ”Mayday” released in 2007 by UNKLE featuring The Duke Spirit. Using the vocals of Liela Moss the track is being mashed together with lo-fi indie act The Radio dept. Mojib then adds his own piano and acapella melodies. The result is a unique fusion of alternative indie, rock and electronica.

I couldn’t have said it better myself!

Devil’s Spoke

Posted on Wednesday, February 17, 2010 in Indie/Folk, Video

The new Laura Marling single is right up my street.

The last album, Alas I Cannot Swim, was all a bit too motionless for me apart from Ghosts which is a serious keeper.

I Speak Because I Can is being praised online and on air and although it’s been sitting on my desk for months, I’ve never gotten round to listening to it.

Saw the new video this week and it’s a real step up in the sense that it’s got a lot more life to it.

Editors – Feel Good Inc (Gorillaz cover)

With the Gorillaz album around the corner I thought I’d republish this Editors post that we did way back in March when we were only little.

I think this acoustic version does the song a lot of justice. Firstly because it’s so far from the original and also because I’m a massive fan of Tom’s dark and moody vocals. It’s also nice how they incorporated a bit of their own stuff at the end.

Angus & Julia Stone

After watching the first 6 minutes of the Hollywood blockbuster Australia I wanted to dive head first out of my bedroom window. My window isn’t nearly high enough to kill me on impact, only cause an extreme amount of pain, which at that time was better than watching anymore of that ‘movie’. I needed something authentically Australian to make me smile and Angus & Julia Stone was the first thing I played.

These Australian siblings are a pretty low-key duo but they’re gradually rising and their new single And The Boys is really really good and it’s got a great video to go with it.

The whole album is delicate and peaceful and ideal for any train journey or sleep session -- not that it’s boring, not at all -- just very mellow.

Their album, A Book Like This, is well worth a closer inspection and here are two tracks from it.

Josh Garrels – 107

Posted on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 in Alternative, Indie/Folk

Ever since a lovely Mahogany reader recommended Josh Garrels to us on our Sleep Playlist post, we’ve been hooked on his incredible music.

I wish I had my own label so I could properly push him in the UK, I think it’s what everyone needs. Proper uplifting honest music from the heart.

His album, Lost Animals, from August is something I recommend to anyone and everyone so check out our previous post on the guy and see what you think.

This song is perfect for the walk to work on a crisp morning.
