In The Spotlight returns this week with a pair of true dance legends, Deekline & Wizard.
Their critically acclaimed album, Back Up Coming Through, was released earlier in the year and a spanking collection of reworks from the came out last month including remixes by Bassnectar, Krafty Kuts and Stanton Warriors.
Hot off their US tour, it’s going from strength to strength for the twosome and we’re overjoyed they found the time to give us their exclusive In The Spotlight feature!

The Prodigy – Smack My Bitch Up -- ![]()
One of our all time favourites . This was made in ’96 I believe and we can still drop it any time, any place, anywhere and it still rocks.
When this record came out I wanted to know where I could get hold of more classy rap bass tunes like this one as they were few and far between
Josh Wink – Higher state of Consciousness -- ![]()
Pop acid break breath rave -- what more could you ask for, I would still play this record now any day.
Mr Ozio – Flat Eric
This was a scene smashing genre crossing atc of genius crossing all scenes house, uk garage, teckno.

Until next time boys!
In The Spotlight – Izzi Dunn

Tits & Ass.
No, it’s not the title of a sexist West Coast rap song nor is it the smutty heading for a Lonely Hearts piece in a local paper. Instead, it’s the title to Izzi Dunn’s new funked up single available from November 16th.
The track we have for you is the Blunt Laser remix and it’s a serious keeper.
There’s a good chance that up until now you haven’t directly heard Izzi Dunn. Now I say directly because as well as writing, producing and playing most of her own material, she’s lent her musical talents (Cello to be exact) to the likes of Mark Ronson, Gorillaz, Chaka Khan and Roots Manuva to name just a few.
As much as this is a remix, the soulful and playfully provocative funk of the original still lingers throughout so stay tuned for the new album due out in January.

The Strings blew me away. Completely changed the way I looked at strings especially coming from a classical background where everything is so straight.

Love the whole album but this song in particularly brings back memories of escaping Hastings.
Another dancefloor classic. Love it when the bass drops.

Thanks again Izzi Dunn for giving us your In The Spotlight tracklist and new remix!!

Alan: This meld of light-hearted synth riffs, simple guitar and bass work, and the dissonant vocals of David Byrne make this distinctive new wave gem special. Here’s a cover I did with my friend, Anthony Field, when I was first getting into production…”
————————————————————————————————————————————
The Clash -- Train in Vain - Buy from iTunes (UK) (US)
Justin: It’s defiantly a grower and it’s more or less a perfect pop song – by The Clash no less. While we produce electro music we try and maintain a pop sensibility tracks. We drop the Discotech remix (which is a club version that leaves the track pretty much intact) all the time!

Jack Beats -- Get Down - Buy from iTunes (UK) (US)
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
Alan: I’d be lying if I said Jack Beats’ new twist on dance music hasn’t inspired me. There’s something about those screeching synth’s and wobbly basses that makes people lose their minds… including my own.

Mylo – Otto’s Journey - Buy from iTunes (UK) (US)

Alan: Otto’s Journey was one of the songs that got me hooked on electronic music. For enhanced listening experience, play this ambient techno masterpiece while driving… really fast.

Cutty Ranks and Diplo -- Dutty Six Pack

Justin: “This track is sick. The first time I heard it on Diplo’s Top Ranking it really threw me for a loop. On that mixtape it really comes out of nowhere and kicks your ass. When we sit down to make a track we always ask ourselves how we can make it sound really different from what’s out there”

In The Spotlight is really starting to take off. It’s so nice to hear what they guys listen to as well as their own material!
Stay tuned for the next one!
In The Spotlight – Rescue Cat

Here we are with our second In The Spotlight feature this time with an upcoming artist from London. Rescue Cat’s new digital release, £10 Bag, speaks about 80′s computer games, childhood and heroin which sound like a lot to take on board but it’s a great song. The electronic sounds that gently come in almost out of nowhere are perfect.
Rescue Cat have some London gigs coming up that I hope I can make. Check Rescue Cat’s MySpace for more info.

The Velvet Underground -- Venus In Furs
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
Lou Reed is the Father I never had. This is the quintessential Velvet Underground song. It’s still quite menacing and powerful 40-odd years on.

Madonna -- Everybody
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
Much more than just an adolescent crush, I really like Madge’s music. She’s written better songs but this but this is a favourite. I love the dirty spoken word intro. She’s such a slut and that’s how I like to remember her.
————————————————————————————————————————————
Man Parrish -- Hip Hop Be Bop
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
I was a b-boy back in the day. I had the Nike jacket, white gloves and the lino. This tune was a classic. I still love the Streetsounds electro albums.
————————————————————————————————————————————
AC/DC -- Live Wire
I came to the mighty DC via on old Beastie’s song that sampled Back In Black. However, Bon Scott was the man, and this is the tune!
————————————————————————————————————————————
The Verve -- Slide Away
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
When I first started a band, I loved that big, trippy rock sound. Bands like Spiritualized and Verve had it down.

The Slickers -- Johnny Too Bad
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
This is one of the best soundtrack albums ever. This song is the stand out tune for me though, especially good on a sunny day.

The Beastie Boys -- Pass The Mic

I love this band. They just seem to have so much fun with whatever they do.

The Happy Mondays -- W.F.L.

Much maligned was ‘indie-dance’ but it’s still a massive influence on me. The Mondays were the best by far. They made dirty, scuzzy music and Shaun Ryder was a brilliant lyricist
————————————————————————————————————————————
John Martyn -- May You Never
I’m not a huge fan of acoustic singer-songwriters but this fella was a little bit special. A proper bad-boy folkie with the voice of an angel. Saw one of his last gigs at The Albert Hall and it was awful. Let’s remember him at his best with this beautiful song…

Much thanks Rescue Cat!
Check back soon for the next In The Spotlight.
In The Spotlight – TLGB

You might remember us posting up a dirty Jack Penate remix a while back? TLGB aka The Living Graham Bond is a London based electro/techno producer and DJ with Kissy Sell Out championing his stuff from the start.
Having recently signed to fidget label Venga Digital there’s definitely lots more in store for him in 2009 and we’re behind him all the way.
Now his two high profile remixes are available for your listening pleasure.

TLGB is also launching our new In The Spotlight feature and he’s revealed to The Mahogany Blog the tracks that have influenced him throughout the years.
Here they are!
Michael Jackson -- Rock With You
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
It’s very trendy to list MJ at the moment, but it’s more Quincy Jones I want to big up with this track. It’s flawless pop production; disco claps, string stabs, outrageously camp synth solos and then just when you think you’ve had it all there’s a final chorus key change! The whole album is incredible with it’s smooth disco-latin-perc-pop vibe, I never get tired of it.
————————————————————————————————————————————
Lyle Lovett -- If I Had A Boat
I’ll be honest, I don’t really know what he’s talking about nor do I want to, it’s just a lovely song. It is also my dream to have a boar and a pony.
————————————————————————————————————————————
Notorious B.I.G. -- Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
Four minutes of pure flashy hip-hop. Unpretentiously pretentious?
————————————————————————————————————————————
Olive -- You’re Not Alone (TLGB Remix)
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
It took me a while to pluck up the courage to do a remix of this because I like it so much, but I think I did exactly what I wanted! Sometimes remixing isn’t about radical ideas, just representation.
————————————————————————————————————————————
Jungle Brothers -- How Ya Want It We Got It (Native Tongues Remix)
From the album Raw Delux, highly underrated and the last true JBs album. The Native Tongues are brilliant and led me to people like Ugly Duckling and People Under The Stairs who are equally innovative
————————————————————————————————————————————
Betty Harris -- Break In The Road
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
I don’t know what the drummer was on when he played this but by-jingo it’s a belter. Rough, raw and full of spunk.
————————————————————————————————————————————
Paul Simon -- Graceland
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
This song and album was the soundtrack to almost every Sunday trip to some sort of archaeological dig/historial reenactment with my parents. I love the organic fusion of cultures, the clever lyrics and most of all the recording style. There are so many lovely echoes, gated reverbs and spacial effects. The percussion really leaps out of the speakers at times and I remember being in a world of my own when I listened to this album whilst sucking on a barley sugar in the backseat.
————————————————————————————————————————————
Calvin Harris -- I’m Not Alone (Burns Rework)
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
My favourite track this summer so far. You have to give it to Mr. Harris, he nails it every time and Burns just punctuates it’s best points.
————————————————————————————————————————————
Funky Porcini -- Dubble
There’s something curiously entertaining about samples of English speech from films in electronic music, I sampled Dirk Bogarde recently.
