Brand New Lancelot

Posted on Monday, February 6, 2012 in Electronica, Remixes

Lancelot had a great year in 2011 with some sharp commissioned remixes of the fellow Aussie’s New Navy and Penguin Prison and in the past two weeks he’s released some brand new sounds.

Starting off with his remix of Australian folk artist Matt Corby whose already beautiful vocals (similar to that of Patrick Watson) are accentuated through Lancelot’s clever productions.

The second comes from his upcoming ‘We Can Dance’ EP due out on 20th February which is the first highly anticipated original works. Both pieces are really nice, can’t wait for the full LP.

Zebra & Howard // Mahogany Mix 008

Posted on Friday, February 3, 2012 in Electronica, Guest Mixes, House, Remixes

Swiss duo Zebra & Howard have dropped a succession of absolutely superb mixes in the past, but it’s been a little quiet on their front recently so we started speaking about kicking off the mixes in 2012 with an exclusive Mahogany mix, and oh boy did they deliver!

The pair have answered some questions as well so click play and read on…

  3. LeSale – Make me Feel so Good (Original Mix)

1. Who is Zebra & Howard, where are you both based and when did it all begin?

Zebra & Howard are Cedric Marti and Jan Skalski. We are both from Switzerland and met in Geneva for the first time, about  3 years ago. We both studied there and got to know each other by attending the same classes.

We soon found out that we both like the same kind of electronic music and as Geneva offers a lot of venues with good DJs we partly got inspired by some of the acts we had seen there. We both had been experimenting with programmes like Ableton for some time before but we had never played in bars or clubs. One day a friend offered us to play in Zurich and we decided to give it a try. We had a lot of fun that night and that’s how it basically began.

2. Where do you both stand when it comes to analog vs. digital — are you the record store or Beatport generation?

We both like going to record stores and get inspired by digging and discovering new records and sounds. We do the same on the internet and usually get the tracks there.

When we listen to a mix or dj set we attribute more importance to how it is mixed than where the tracks are bought or what device is used. The whole thing must be coherent, which means that there must be some sort of logic continuation with one track following the other. But most important of all, you have to be able to enjoy what you are hearing.

3. Talk to us about the mix you created for us

The mix we did for you is  a compilation of some tracks we have been listening to lately. It has some disco, soul and  house influences.

Some of the tracks contained I’ve discovered during my recent stay in New York, like NY’s finest and Victor Simonellis 1993 track ‘Do You Feel Me’ or the mor recent Lula Circus’ ‘Miami Vice’. The Miami Vice EP came out this fall on Brooklyn based label Stranjjur which is led by some guys who initially limited themselves to organizing parties in New York and introducing amongst others artist such as MANIK (Hot Natured) and Pezzner (Freerange, Crosstown Rebels) to their hometown. As a consequence the EP now also features remixes by both MANIK and Pezzner to which it is also worth listening to.

Other tracks are from emerging European producers, such as British youngster Maxxi Soundsystem, whose moves we have been observing since his debut ‘Criticize’, or Göteborg based Jonas Rathsman, who started out together with DJ Nibc as the duo ‘Stuffa’.

Finally, and since we both started out by playing disco and nu disco records, we’ve got some these in it too, like e.g. Tensnake’s remix of  ’Build a House’.

Remixes By Dems

Posted on Monday, January 30, 2012 in Electronica, Remixes

We’ve downloaded, listened, streamed, mixed and watched an almost unhealthy amount of music since the year began but like a greedy over-eater, we’ve kept some special space reserved for new material coming from electronic three-piece Dems and yesterday our appetites were rewarded with a couple of remixes and whilst an original EP is on it’s way, we’ll keep our teeth sunk into these.

Both are complete reinventions – firstly a spine-chilling remix of the folky Jonnie Commons and secondly a reworking of teenage South London popstar A.M.E.

The 14th – Take Me There

You may remember a while back we posted about a little duo called the The 14th. Well since our post Tom and  Tracey have continued to crop up on almost every tip for 2012 list out there and their ascension is not slowing down. If the quality of The 14th’s two-step vocal driven music continues, I don’t see how its going to.

They’ve just released the video for their latest single ‘Take Me There’. Tracy looks absolutely incredible. They’ve also announced a slew of tour dates where you can go and check out what all the fuss is about.

9th Feb – HMV Next Big Thing @ Jazz Cafe, London
13th Feb – I Luv Live @ XOYO, London
16th Feb – Buffalo Bar, Cardiff
18th Feb – The Little Room, Sunderland
25th Feb – Harley, Sheffield
2nd March – KOKO, London
3rd March – The Unit, Southampton
9th March – The Hope, Brighton
15th March – The Cavern, Exeter

‘Take Me There’ is out on 13th February.

POW! // Ifan Dafydd

Posted on Thursday, January 26, 2012 in Electronica, Producer of the Week

Ifan Dafydd is still something of an enigma in producer and DJ circles. Although his output has got him some top level praise from his contemporaries, not a huge amount is known about the man himself. As such this will probably be one of the more copy light POW posts we’ve ever had.

Ifan Dafydd – No Good

The first we heard of Ifan was with the lauded release of ‘No Good’ – a track that sampled the late great Amy Winehouse with a subtlety and originality that many have tried to foster and could not. You could place him somewhere between garage and dubstep, but Ifan has a sparse, cool sound all his own. That garage inspiration can be heard to full effect on his track ‘Miranda’ – a moody two-step mash up of Usher’s ‘You Remind Me’.

Ifan Dafydd – Miranda

Ifan’s remix of rising star Emelie Sande takes her story of forbidden love from commercial soul anthem into James Blake down-pitched vocal territory. The Blake comparison is regularly made (Ifan apparently lived with him for a time) and although clearly there are similarities in the two artist’s output, Ifan’s tinkering with vocals and melody seems a little less self-indulgent.

Emelie Sande – Daddy (Ifan Dafydd Remix)

Ifan’s latest release uses sparse vocals and sweeping moody instrumentals to great effect. The double A-side ‘Treehouse / To Me’ is released digitally on February 6th. Although Ifan Dafydd is still currently a bit of a mystery, if this EP release is anything to go by 2012 feels like the year when he will step out of James Blake’s shadow and  carve his own niche.

SBTRKT (The Neon Lights Remix)

Posted on Thursday, January 26, 2012 in Electronica, Remixes

The Neon Lights have a penchant for an incredible tidy remixes and edits and their remix of The xx topped our ‘Best Remixes of 2010′ poll back in 2010.

They’re back now with a sumptous bootleg remix of SBTRKT and Sampha’s Hold On which word on the grapevine says SBTRKT himself is dropping on his DJ sets.

Huge.
