Brand New Chase & Status

Earlier in the week I made it down to see Chase & Status at Brixton Academy and I didn’t realise how powerful some of their music really is. They delivered an epic live show and played the new single featuring regular collaborator and friend Plan B.
The new single, End Credits, will feature in the soundtrack of the new Michael Caine film ‘Harry Brown‘ which also features Plan B aka Ben Drew in a supporting role.
The film looks good from the clips in the music video but anything with Michael Caine brandishing a gun is going to be good isn’t it?
The single is available to buy from November 1st with the film following later in the month.

Quick Update – Byrds of Prey (DC Breaks Remix)

Just yesterday we featured the DC Breaks remix of Bertie Blackman’s new single however it was a radio rip so although it’s an epic track – you really need to hear it at the highest audio quality and without Annie Mac speaking over it.
Here it is!

Bertie Blackman

Annie Mac has got some goodies under her sleeves (or her producers do) and over the weekend she played such a dirty drum and bass tune.
So good in fact that it reinvigorated me back into the genre and since then I’ve been hungry for high calibre more D&B. Any suggestions?
I searched long and hard online to find an actual MP3 file of the remix but to no avail so I made a radio rip. Can’t wait to have the actual audio file. Annie is talking at the beginning and the end but the song is too good for me just to have to myself.

As for Bertie Blackman – she’s an Australian singer who hasn’t gained much press here but she’s defintely got a big following back home.
Another remix of hers by Wild Turkey’s is also really nice. Chilled out and a little like something Simian Mobile Disco would make.

I checked out Bertie’s original stuff.

To Like Or Not To Like…That Is The Question

There’s no denying it, Calvin Harris has the potion for making hits.
Since Acceptable In The 80′s made it’s first debut back in 2006 he’s been one of the biggest commercial success stories in the UK. Now whether they’re good hits or not is entirely up to you but he’s infiltrated the charts like a SWAT team on 80% pure.
I think it was the title to his debut album that put a bitter taste in everyones mouth – I Created Disco is a brave name for anyones album, regardless of their musical stature and reviews since then have been all-round bad but it seems the new album has managed to gain some positive appraisals.
The Rain is the opening track to the new album and it’s won me over. I haven’t listened to any more of the album yet. To be perfectly honest I’m a bit scared to as I don’t want to ruin everything by venturing any deeper in case things gets shit.
As well as that I was recommended a hidden gem by a friend. Featurecast has done a Drum & Bass remix of I’m Not Alone and it needs to be heard.

Anyone actually listened to the whole album? Drop a line or two about it and maybe it will persuade me to listen to it!
James Brown In The Jungle Groove

The weather’s played quite a big part in some of the blog posts recently – that’s because it’s been so shit recently!
At first thought, James Brown and Drum & Bass sound as compatible as smoked salmon and mince pies but Featurecast have ‘regrooved’ a classic track by warming it up with some light and fluffy warm D&B and it works so well.
It’s a shame the Godfather of Soul is no longer with us – he passed away on the Christmas morning of 2006 after performing thousands of shows across the world for decades. He really was The Hardest Working Man in Show Business.
It’s nice that Mr. Brown can live on in different musical forms – especially a bit of Drum & Bass!

Cast A Light

Cigarettes are disgusting.
If cigarettes got me high, I may reconsider the health implications occasionally.
If cigarettes tasted like Ben & Jerrys Ice Cream, then I may reconsider the health implications occasionally.
They don’t do either so I don’t understand how so many of you can actually spend your hard earned cash on the things when they do little for stimulation or taste. They also give you cancer.
Now I’m not just having a rant because I have a great song by Plan B which is based on the loss the sticks can cause. The song samples Crosses by Jose Gonzalez and is a real treat despite the grim setting for the song which may or may not have been based on his life as a child.
Haven’t heard of Plan B before? He provided the vocals for the Chase & Status track Pieces – their first big break into the mainstream.

Back From New York

OK back from New York after an eventful little holiday and there’s definitely a noticeable gap in posts since then.
I had these tracks playing on the iPod during the painful ‘battery chicken’ style plane ride and they soothed my aching body.
Modeselektor – The White Flash ft. Thom Yorke
First up is the incredible collaboration between Berlin producers and Thom Yorke that features on Modeselektors album.
Brookes Brothers vs Futurebound – Dawn Treader
I’d like to compare Drum & Bass to fizzy drinks. There is definitely a ‘Diet’ or ‘Light’ option with a lot of the new stuff coming out and to be honest I prefer it – This one’s a favourite of Annie Mac and now a favourite of mine.Holy Ghost! – Hold On – download
Aesop Rock – None Shall Pass
Aesop is a true lyricist – not a rapper who spits a few lines and then hangs on the chorus. There must be seven or eight pages of words here – It’s hard to believe the talent some people have to spit these kind of songs.
Ladyhawke – Paris Is Burning (Alex Metric Remix)
Alex Metric is a Mahogany favourite and so far all his remixes have delivered. The vocal edits are a bit of a trademark now. Looking forward to his set at Neon Noise in August in London!
The Day Today

Lots of ups and downs for me today so what better way to musically represent that by starting slow and finishing fast.
Coldplay – See You Soon
Touching song from the Live 2003 album recorded in Sydney.
Zero 7 – Crosses
From The Garden album where we hear Sia and Jose Gonzalez lent all their skills throughout. This track features Jose and is one of the best tracks on the record.
Boy Crisis – L’homme
New York electro-pop band with a little more soul than their most common cousins, MGMT.
Pendulum – Still Grey
For the D&B lovers out there who didn’t catch on to their new live lineup (at all!) – Hold Your Colour is still a landmark album. Acts like Subfocus, Brookes Brothers and Chase & Status need to be thanking these guys for paving their way into the mainstream.
Pendulum – Hold Your Colour
Another track from Hold Your Colour. If you’re a regular gym person then you need to put this on. You’ll beat your personal best or realise the only real exercise is to be done at Fabric.
