Toronto native Kevin McPhee is someone who I have really got into in the last year. His sound is still developing but it seems to be characterised by subtle organic samples and vocals that can bring you to the cusp of tears. He’s just provided Resident Advisor with the latest edition of their RA Podcast series, so it seemed like an appropriate moment to confess my growing audio crush on Mr McPhee and make him our Producer of the Week.
When flying solo McPhee uses a glut of gorgeous RnB vocals to bring melody to his work. However, he doesn’t overproduce them, leaving vocal samples from great singers like Amel Larrieux to remain recogniseable and fresh.

When McPhee works with other producers like Gerry Read, he seems to get heavier and harder. The pairs’ work on tracks like ‘Demolition Man’ sounds much colder and more like classic European techno.

However, McPhee’s remix of Sepalcure’s ‘The One’ suggests that he can get down just as hard on his own – the beat is furious – but no matter how driving he gets the feeling is always warm and human. And its this aspect of his sound that makes me feel so much when I listen to his music.
