MCA

Adam Yauch’s passing was such a devastatingly huge loss to music industry, let alone his family and friends, and so we’ve selected a couple of items for you to enjoy today which is our small tribute to a massive talent.

Back in 2007 the guys decided to leave the microphones in the studio cupboard and approach a purely instrumental album. The LP got them a Grammy award for Best Pop Instrumental Album and ‘Off The Grid’ is the stand-out track for me. Despite the absence of lyrics, you still get a undeniable feel and vibe of the Beastie Boys.

Shortly after reading the news of his death, I realised that I’d never properly watched an interview with the trio and this tongue-in-cheek discussion about their former ‘hiatus’ is hilarious.

Our friend Phanton sent us this new bootleg remix tribute. It’s tech house that plays nicely on the vocals from ‘Pop Your Balloon’.

In 2011, MCA (who is also a keen and gifted film-maker) assembled a ridiculously strong all-star cast and recreated ‘Fight For Your Right’. This interview for Hulu explained more;

Hulu: Tell me about how this all came about and how this cast of characters got involved.

Mike D: Adam, a.k.a. MCA from the Beastie Boys, directed it. The very start of the idea was that we were doing a video that’s a period piece. It leaves off taking place right afterwards, right after the first “Fight For Your Right” video.

Serendipitously, we went to do some promotion for the Hot Sauce Committee album, Danny McBride happened to be on our flight. Sent him over grasshopper. Hard to do that on an airplane–to send him over grasshopper–but we did it. But we started talking about this idea and it snowballed from there.

Once Danny McBride said yes, it spread all around.
