Mahogany Minute with Submotion Orchestra

We grew up… in different parts of the country but ended up finding each other in the good old northern city of Leeds!

Now you can find us in… either in Leeds and London.

It all started when… Tommy Evans (drummer) and Dom Ruckspin (sound designer) were inspired to set up a live dubstep band after they worked on a project together at the York Minster in 2008. They handpicked the rest of us from the vibrant music scene in Leeds and that was the beginning of Submotion.

If we’re not in the studio or on stage, you’ll find us… eating. We’re a band that loves to eat good food. We’re probably driving somewhere to eat, or in a café, or scoffing on Danny’s (percussion) wife Donna’s baking when rehearsing (she’s the best cook!).

We can’t perform unless we have… a band talk from Taz, (keys). He always gets us in the mood for a good show! It almost became a bit of a ritual on the last tour. …That and also spiced rum, or Oyster Bay wine for Ruby.

The one gig we’ll never forget… Soundwave festival 2011 in Croatia was pretty special! It’s such a beautiful little festival with the stage right by the beach and we played the sunset slot. There were some really beautiful moments in that gig.

A huge musical inspiration for us is… that’s a tough one, as every single member of the band have varied and eclectic tastes in music, ranging from Jazz through to Grime, from Choral to Soul/R&B to electronic and so on. Trips away in the van are always a great time for the band as we listen and share a lot of music with each other.

We wish we hadn’t… got Ruby involved she’s a pain in the… haha only joking! I guess we don’t wish we hadn’t done anything really. Everything we have done up until now has made us who we are as a band and as people.

Our favourite festival is… probably Soundwave Festival in Croatia, or Outlook Festival also in Croatia – Glastonbury has to be the best UK festival though!

It makes us happy when… we have good sound during the gig, and sound checks don’t last longer than a hour, and good toilet facilities… – we don’t ask for much, huh!

It makes us sad when… sound during the gig is bad, and sound checks take longer than an hour, the worst being 5 1/2 hours!!! And bad backstage toilet facilities hehe.

If there’s one thing we’ve learnt it’s… to be nice to each other! We’ve become like a little family, so it’s important to look out for on another

In twenty years time… our oldest member will be 55, wooaahh! We might be grey and we’ll still be making music together, hopefully!

If you’re new to our music, listen to All Yours first…as it was our first single release from our debut album ‘Finest Hour’ and it seemed to encapsulate us entirely as a band.
