Maceo Plex, monika of American DJ and producer Eric Erstonel, is a fairly recent reincarnation of techno producer Maetrik, who released tracks across a raft of high profile techno labels throughout the late 90s and 00s. Why Eric decided to cast off his former sound and stride out into something different is a bit of a mystery, and my knowledge of his back catalogue under Maetrik is pretty limited. Suffice to say that the music he has released as Maceo Plex is so soulful and deep, my curiousity is tempered pretty quickly.

One listen to a track like ‘Vibe Your Love’ shows Maceo Plex’s ability to create perfectly balanced soulful house music; capable of real emotion and driving rhythm at the same time. The vocal sample soars over the track, and takes your spirits with it.

House music in its very nature is a sexy genre of dance music, but where so many producers stray into slightly cheesy territory with their breathy vocals, Plex strides confidently through with a near perfect balance of sex, heat, emotion and depth. Even though this collaboration with Elon ‘Floating Faces’ has a darker edge, it still retains a sultry Maceo Plex ambience.

And when you combine Maceo Plex with another producer fond of taking things deep you get stunning results. This remix of ‘Your Style’ by Maya Jane Coles is so deep and cool you could get lost in it.
