Pion // Mahogany Mix 006

Posted on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 in Guest Mixes

We’re overjoyed with how the Mahogany mixes are taking off with a total of six under our belt from incredible producers from all over the world including the US (Casual Encounters), Lithuania (Downtown Party Network), Toronto (Jeremy Glenn) and Germany (elpierro & Hannes Fischer) and now it’s Pion representing Serbia!

Pion caught our attention with his deep, deep house original productions – something that I consider a true way into my heart – so we had to get him on board our guest mix series and fortunately he had enough time before Christmas to create one.

It’s just over 50 minutes of pure deep house music bliss including his own track Past Summer early on and tracks from the likes of Huxley and Moodymanc.

It’s been my cycling mix this week and helped the 12km become enjoyable!

1. Tell us about the Mahogany Mix

Tracks that I placed in my Mahogany mix are some of the favourites that I’ve played over the last couple months. I think they’re all colourful songs with a different vibe.

2. Who are your top dance/electronic/house music influences?

With regard to house/dance music which I’ve been listening to for more than 13 years, it would be impossible to only select few artists but I like many different styles and most important to me is a really good vibe. There are a lot of great producers in the scene right now.

3. What are you planning musically for 2012?

Well in 2012… I’ll try to release a lot of good tunes and EPs. That is a plan for now. There are some fresh tunes an remix’s ready to be released in January and February. Also I’ll be a resident DJ in some clubs here in Belgrade where I can represent good club music from here and abroad.

Azari & III – Reckless With Your Love (Tiga Remix)

Posted on Monday, December 12, 2011 in Remixes

Whether you are a well seasoned fan of house, or just dabble in the scene, it has been impossible to avoid Canada’s Azari & III this year. They have developed a big reputation for their funk driven live sets, walking a the line between commercial and underground and pulling in music fans from both sides.

Azari & III’s album is finally getting a UK release in February 2012. In the mean time, their latest single ‘Reckless With Your Love’ has been given a electro twist by DJ superstar Tiga: gone are the disco stabs – replaced by a classic Tiga bassline and mashed up echoing vocals.

The Skints – On A Mission (Katy B Cover)

Posted on Monday, December 12, 2011 in Covers

East London Reggae group The Skints have been making waves recently with their cover of dubstep queen Katy B’s ‘On A Mission’. Bringing a lilting sun drenched vibe to the electronic antics of the original, it shows off a ska punk sound that seems wasted on the winter time.

Luckily, having raised the funds to produce their album via their fans using Pledge Music, The Skints will be releasing a full length album in the new year. Just in time for summer. In the meantime check out more reggae music from The Skints over on their MySpace.

In The Mix(tape) – Kerri Chandler

Posted on Monday, December 12, 2011 in House, In The Mix(tape) ©

Father, patron, pioneer – whatever you call it, Kerri Chandler is a house music legend. He’s someone I’ll spend ever waking hour trying to get on our guest mix series and his two decades in the business means his mixes are, as you’d expect, brilliant

This one has filled up almost my entire day having listened to it three times which is actually becoming a bit of a routine when it comes to good mixes..

  • First time round is a relaxed listen, enjoying whatever beats are thrown my way and at times zoning out in the process.
  • Second listen and focus on the blends, transitions and effects where possible.
  • Lastly, take in all the aspects of the mix from above and truly appreciate the time and effort it took to create.

This one starts off soulfully and gradually gets deeper but comes around again toward the end with old school vibes.

There’s no tracklisting with this one so you have to trust us (and more importantly him!)

POW! // Matthew Dear

Posted on Sunday, December 11, 2011 in Producer of the Week

New York’s Matthew Dear has been producing and song writing for many years, performing with his Big Hand band under his own name, releasing dark techno beats as Audion, and under several less well known monikas – Jabberjaw and False. On top of production and performance, Matthew was also one of the co-founders of music and fine art label Ghostly International and is now embarking on a series of DJ sets around the globe in 2012 having been touring with his band relentlessly in 2011.  It seems there is very little this man cannot do.

Matthew Dear – Dog Days

Having broken on to people’s radar with 2003′s album Leave Luck to Heaven and the techno heavy house track ‘Dog Days’, Dear has subsequently developed a unique blend of dark seductive gothic tinged pop music that is catchy as it is melancholy. Dear’s voice is often nothing more than a broken deep drone. The two sides to his sound can be seen perfectly on his later album Asa Breed with the dancefloor smash ‘Don & Sherri’ and the hypnotic synths of opening track ‘Fleece on Brain’.

Matthew Dear – Don & Sherri

Matthew Dear – Fleece on Brain

2010′s Black City further developed this dark yet danceable electro-pop sound. However, when Dear does turn straight to darkness you are left with beautiful yet devastating results, such as ‘Slow Dance’.

Matthew Dear – Slow Dance.

2012 will bring Matthew back on the scene with new EP Headcage released in January, which sees Dear working collaboratively with other producers and vocalists. To celebrate the lead track is free to download from Ghostly’s soundcloud.

Monument Valley // Mahogany Session

——————————————–

I grew up… in West London. Apart from a year in Madrid, I’ve always lived here.

Now you can find me in… Highbury, North London, just up the road from the Emirates. When Arsenal score the windows shake.

If I’m not in the studio or on stage, you’ll find me… at home on the sofa. One of the best things about music is that it gets me out of the house.

I can’t perform unless I have… a guitar and a capo. Other than that I’m not too fussy. I like playing with other people, but playing solo is cool too.

If I could take one CD with me on holiday it would be… 2001?

The one gig I’ll never forget… would either be Josh Ritter at the Scala or Belle & Sebastian at Hammersmith Apollo. Both are a few years ago now, but because of the people I was with they’re basically unforgettable. I’m not sure what Josh Ritter’s up to now but the record he was touring at the time, ‘Hello Starling’, is still one of my favourites.

I wish I hadn’t… left it so late to start playing the guitar. I’ve taught myself over the last 5 or 6 years and I wish I’d started earlier.

My most treasured possession is… not actually mine. I play a Fender Telecaster that was lent to me by my friend Greg (who plays keyboard and cello for Monument Valley). It’s his Dad’s guitar and it’s too beautiful. I treasure that.

My favourite festival is… without a doubt Primavera Sound in Barcelona. When I lived in Spain a couple of my friends were playing so I went along. It’s an ace setting and the bill is always. always brilliant. The first time I went (in 2008 I think) I saw Okkervil River, WHY?, Bon Iver, Silver Jews, all of whom are among my very favourite artists now. I hadn’t even heard of WHY? before that festival, now Yoni Wolf is a big hero of mine.

My favourite piece of clothing… changes all the time. At the moment it’s probably a t-shirt my Dad gave me. It’s an enormous white t shirt with a picture of (I think) Stanley Matthews which I can really clearly remember him wearing when I was little.

It makes me happy when… QPR win, when people like my music, when I get home after a tour or a series of shows.

It makes me sad when… people go to shows but don’t listen to the bands.

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt it’s… to play to the people who are listening.

If you’re new to my music, I’d suggest listening to Valentine’s Park Pt 2 first.

My most recent release is… the TONGUES EP, it’s out on November 28th 2011.
