POW! // Jack Steadman

Posted on Friday, December 16, 2011 in Producer of the Week

Bombay Bicycle Club frontman Jack Steadman is a man of many talents, and no doubt a man with not much spare time.

He’s written almost every song of BBC’s three critically acclaimed LPs since 2009 and toured every corner of the globe for which he’s become a leading figure in UK music, yet his passions go beyond the conventional and last year he began releasing his own studio productions as free downloads.

Cheating

There’s no doubt his tracks have a distinctly unique style, from chopped and screwed beats, to 2-step and heavily tweaked vocal editing and the two productions created whilst in Hong Kong recently not only demonstrate the styles but also how influenced he was by the city-state.

Tsim Sha Tsui

Mong Kok

Remixes are also a big part for Steadman and this Mobb Deep is as refreshing as it is sublime.

What I like best about Jack Steadman is his consistency and diversity – he’s a melting pot of creativity and whilst he’ll continue creating great music with Bombay Bicycle Club via a large major record label deal, he’ll always have his own independent platform to release whatever he wants, whenever he wants, and every track so far has been top quality.

There will be a few artists successful today, who will be prominent in the shaping of music in the next twenty or more years and Steadman is likely to be one of them

Flight Facilities – Foreign Language (Video)

Posted on Thursday, December 15, 2011 in Video

Foreign Language dropped way back in summer and there was a small itch for an official music video after enjoying the Crave You video so much and now I can see why it’s taken so long.

A mini-movie style video for the song features a baddie with an awful haircut, a ripped african-american man, hot girls with pistols and a samurai sword which, combined with a 70′s setting, makes for a great vid!

Looking forward to more FF in 2012.

DNB Tactics 007

Posted on Thursday, December 15, 2011 in Drum and Bass

DNB Tactics released their seventh mix and this time they’re evolving their format with the introduction of guests, and the first guest is Bristol’s Sound Tactix aka Nick Cashmore.

As I’ve said before when posting on these mixes, the tracklists are usually awash with names that I’ve never heard of but each time I’m introducing to a whole host of exciting producers and they serve as my monthly liquid drum and bass fix.

We’re old, old friends with the Tactics guys and it’s nice to see our love for Tottenham Hotspurs has made it into the intro — Arsenal fans beware!

King Charles // Mahogany Session

There’s talk of King Charles replacing Prince Phillip on the British sterling notes when the times comes and with his philosophical and theoretical lyrics (such that gained him the International Songwriting Competition award in 2010), he could easily be crowned as the Monarch before long!

We were actually all set for a session with him in July 2010 at Lounge on the Farm festival until his trusty tour bus broke down halfway there. Since then (King) Charles has continued to tour all over, growing a loyal fanbase and hair as well as preparing a plethora of songs for his upcoming debut album and we’ve come a long way since then as well so it was a perfect time to get together for a session.

We met in a quiet pub before it opened in East London and shot two great solo acoustic tracks upstairs and in the courtyard outside.

There’s a real simplicity to these two songs and it’s just great to face one man with a guitar and his thoughts.

Ben Howard (Surprise Flashmob)

Posted on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 in Alternative, Video

The revelation of Ben Howard’s album was a massive highlight of 2012 for me and it’s one of those LPs which always goes down well whatever my mood.

Only Love is my favourite track of the album and there isn’t a great deal of live/acoustic versions online until this one popped up a couple of weeks ago. Filmed in the Netherlands by Sensu Films, Howard and the band thought they were going for a normal session until hundreds of fans appear out of the blue from up the road and the result is amazing.

Speaking about it Ben said ‘we didn’t realise anyone was coming. I was tired and behaving like a jerk. It was probably one of the craziest things we’ve ever done.’

Lovely!
