Mahogany Bloggin’ in the USA!

Jack Daniels is celebrating his birthday this weekend with a multitude of celebrations, all culminating at the historical distillery in Mr Daniels’ hometown of Lynchburg.
Plan B, Warpaint as well as Kay Flay and The Silver Cornet Band (including Steve Cropper who penned the Otis classic on the Dock of the Bay!) will be playing live and we’re flying over there today to provide ample coverage through the blog, Twitter as well as Instagram. Not to mention drinking our way through a proud amount of Jack and juice!!
Keep up to date and stay tuned.
Mark.
POW! // Maya Jane Coles

At just 23-years-old, Maya Jane Coles already has a reputation as one of the UK’s most original and exciting house producers.
In 2010 British-Japanese Maya was thrust into the mainstream by several high quality releases, particularly the dance floor favourite ‘What They Say’. However what many didn’t realise was that Maya had been writing and producing music since she was 15 and had an established reputation with many top house producers and promoters for bold innovative tracks; having released music on labels such as 2020 Vision, Dogmatik, Lo:rise, and Mobilee.

Maya Jane Coles – Senseless
Maya’s music has much more diverse roots than just house. Cool minimal and vibrant techno sounds run through her latest tracks, along with echoes of dub, hip hop and R&B. These influences are what make her house music so infectious, but they also take centre stage in her other projects – such as with her dub alias Nocturnal Sunshine.
Nocturnal Sunshine – Can’t Hide (The Way I Feel)
Along with her own music, MJC’s abilities with a remix showcase her eclectic sound. Massive Attack, Tricky, Gorillaz, and Tom Middleton are just some of the big names given a Maya Jane Coles rework. Our personal favourite is her beautiful remix of Little Dragon’s ‘Ritual Union’.

We Humans.

So we got this through not long ago and wow, the smile across my face and beating foot on the floor says it all.
The pace and structure of their debut track plus the solid surging drums and guitar is spot on and rings reminiscent of old boys like Primal Scream and Ocean Colour Scene and is a real ode to musical Britannia.
The 4-piece from Shropshire (UK ) are readying their debut release which will see One In A Million along with another track Axis drop in November.
I’ve got to be honest, and not to spoil anything here – but the band look too polished for the music they’re making. It’s bordering on an X-Factor boy band when they really should be a little more care-free about their rather polished look.

Rayzaflo and Haze – No Time Like Now

Producer, DJ and label boss Jay Haze is probably best known for his contributions to the techno and house scene, but as an artist he has a history of being versatile with his sound and experimenting with different genres like pop, dubstep, soul and hip hop.
‘No Time Like Now’ is a collaboration with 18-year-old Mississippian MC Rayzaflo. It’s a great showcase for a bright new MC talent but is also a seriously heavy set of slickly produced hip hop tracks from Mr Haze. He calls it ‘conscious bass pop’ – whatever you want to call it it’s well worth checking out and below are some choice cuts from the LP.

Introducing… Worship

Worship’s debut track is set for release in November so in light of that, House of Glass is doing the rounds online to get everyone talking about it, including us!
I’d never heard of the boys before today but they’ve got a solid sound which is actually much more suited to the chilly temperatures of recent so the timing on this is really good.
Have a listen and see what you think…

Killa Kela & Eklips // Mahogany Session

The UK’s Killa Kela and France’s Eklips are both beatbox heavyweights and their long-lasting friendship and passion for the self-made music has culminated in an upcoming collaborative EP, scheduled for release later this month.
This exciting partnership brought them to London and we managed to lock them down (figuratively speaking) for a really special exclusive session just as the Autumn leaves started to cover the park.
Just prior to filming them we gave you the option to vote for which track they cover and Swedish House Mafia’s One was the winner so below is their version plus a teaser/taster of a track from the EP!
Enjoy!

Lana Del Rey – Video Games (Jamie Woon Remix)

The web has been buzzing with hype about Lana Del Rey for a few months now, and whether you think she’s a manufactured star or a self-developed artist, its been impossible to avoid her break through track ‘Video Games’.
Video Games is a beautiful melancholy song that shows off Lana’s bluesy voice. It has that rare ability to make you stop in your tracks and listen to every note. Surprisingly in the hands of crooner Jamie Woon the track becomes a different beast with a grimy dub baseline and screwed vocals. And it really works.

Clement Marfo & The Frontline // Mahogany Session
follow us on Instragram @themahoganysessions
We met up with rapper Clement Marfo & The Frontline in Portobello not long ago for the first session after our summer break and what a group to kick it off with.
It’s refreshing to see rappers breaking away from the typical DJ set up and work with a solid band and supporting vocalist Kojo has an incredible set of vocal chords.
Their touring this month and to download the free EP, head to their website.
