Black Cherry // Mahogany Session
Winter is coming, the evenings are getting shorter but the acts keep getting better on Mahogany and Black Cherry are one of our favourite unsigned bands at the moment.
Megane Quashie heads the band and ever since hearing Lost In The System we’ve been wanting to meet up to shoot something unplugged and stripped back. It was the Queen of Hoxton’s roof garden which lay host to them as the sun set (quicker than we expected!) on two spectacular session songs.

Find out more information via their Facebook and I strongly recommend heading to the Black Cherry YouTube page as every video’s a real treat.
POW! // Lovebirds

If there’s one house track that defined my summer it was created by Lovebirds and aside from ‘that’ track, it’s been a steller year for the German producer and things are only getting better!
Lovebirds (real name Sebastian ‘Basti’ Doering) came to many peoples attention with ‘Want You In My Soul’ featuring Stee Downes but his background and musical experience as a solo artist spreads much further back, starting with Winding Road Records. His first EP through the label was back in 2007 and his classic funk influences are the backbone for his sumptuous mid-tempo productions.
Lovebirds – Modern Stalking
In The Shadows followed a year later featuring Holly Backler on the vocals and the stage was set, the sound had been defined and Lovebirds was in full flight.
Lovebirds – In The Shadows
Fast forward three years and he’s in full swing – taking the show on the road as well as outputting a lot more music with a much deeper sound to it. He and friend Vincenzo are putting the finishing touches to their new label, Teardrop Records, and his latest EP (Honeybadger) is up on the Cloud as we speak.
Lovebirds – Running Backwards
As for ‘that’ summer track, here it is.

Introducing… Drew Smith

Canadian artist Drew Smith got in touch with us late last week with his song Love Teeth and it’s been playing everyday since.
The former teacher from Ontario taught English as a second language and one of his former students created an animated video to go alongside the delicate song. Speaking about it in his email he said “…I kept in correspondence with many of my students, and was pleasantly surprised to find one of them, Sohee Jeon, had become an established animator in South Korea. She expressed how much she had been enjoying my music, and while I was working on my newest record The Secret Languages she generously offered up her services to make an animated video for my newest single “Love Teeth”.
It’s a lovely track and something you want to curl up in front of the fire with alongside a lovely hot chocolate.

New Video from New Look
New Look’s latest single maintains the Canadian duo’s rep for pretty ‘Future Pop’ electronics.
Nap On The Bow shows off their skill in writing great pop music and Sarah Ruba’s voice sounds amazing. The video was produced using the camera from an XBox Kinect by directors Tim and Joe from Colonel Blimp – which has given it a 3D digital underwater feel. Tim and Joe said of the video “the crude imagery you get from the camera led our approach – the CG all needed to a similar lo-fi yet ethereal and beautiful feel”.
These are pretty perfect visuals for the band – check it out below.

In The Mix(tape) – Soul Clap Disco Step 2001

Soul Clap just delivered a little gift to fabric in the form of a mix, their very first mixture so some people say.
The 60+ mix delves into their own personal collections as well as some upcoming boogies and the ’2001′ drop in the title signifies its old school traits.

Pawas

Just stumbled across this track during a long SoundCloud exploration session and I’m currently in minimal bass heaven.
Germany’s Pawas has dedicated this one to the late Nina Simone ala ‘Bojangles’.

Keaton Henson // Mahogany Session
Keaton’s online presence has a good deal of mystery behind it and given his shy nature, there aren’t dozens of online sessions or photoshoots or interviews and for an artist like him, that’s hugely positive in many ways. Jumping online to see a beaming Facebook profile, bandcamp and professional website can simply be an example of an expensive PR or management deal and it’s hard to make an honest opinion if we’re spoon-fed every little detail.
Take Bon Iver’s first album, it’s the perfect example of creating unique and strong relationships because we as an audience are given the control over what judgement to make.
Now there’s a quiet storm brewing behind Henson (you can read about him in more detail via our Introducing post) as he prepares to release his first single ahead of his debut album early next year, yet it’s not completely clear as to what the next steps are for him given that it’s unlikely he’ll play live gigs soon or perhaps ever.
Good news however as Keaton is familiar with our sessions and their intimacy and was really keen to meet up to record an absolutely beautiful track on a chilly afternoon not long ago. These are the few items that will help build your opinion as times goes on and we were absolutely thrilled to document it for you.
