Mahogany Minute with Arista from Guillemots

Posted on Monday, October 31, 2011 in Mahogany Minute ©

I grew up… in 26 different houses, but it all began on a small fishing Island off the West coast of Canada called Sointula BC. Idillic as it comes!

Now you can find me in… East London, Hackney way, which I found out yesterday whilst looking online at my Family history is where my Grandmothers family has lived since 1670!

It all started when… my father played Mingus records to me whilst in the womb! Along with much dedication, love and encouragement from my Mother.

If I’m not in the studio or on stage, you’ll find me… EATING, SLEEPING, COOKING, CLEANING, LOVING my MISIU etc, you know the score!

My most treasured piece of musical equipment… is my SUPER LUSH very old very beautiful, very yummy daddy of a double bass!

If there’s one album that’s inspired me it’s… a Monastic Trio, Alice Coltrane!

My favourite festival… NO AR COQUETEL MOLOTOV Brazil!

A highlight of my musical career so far… playing the Pyramid stage, Glastonbury and top of the pops.

I can’t perform unless I have… my hands! My band! And a big FAT sound!

I wish I hadn’t… doubted myself so deeply for so many years, such a waste of time and energy!

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt it’s… hard work pays off and what you put in/out you get back!

If you’re new to our music, I suggest listening to Throw Me a Sun (B-side to our single Get Over It) first.

Lamb (Remixed)

Posted on Monday, October 31, 2011 in Remixes

There are benefits and drawbacks to living next door to a producer and there’s no point lulling about the 4am mastering sessions so let’s focus on the good parts instead.

It’s an eye-for-an-eye situation; he lives next door to the Editor of Mahogany Blog and, as the Editor, I get the inside scope on his workings (along with the occasional tutorial in Ableton).

Ro~Ro’s been hard at the work over the summer and his works are starting to trickle through his SoundCloud account, the latest being a top remix of a track you may not expect; Lamb’s 2001 track Gabriel.

Katherine Jenkins // Mahogany Session

Posted on Saturday, October 29, 2011 in Mahogany Sessions ©

We’ve had all kinds of artists perform on our channel, across dozens of genres, but never have we had an Opera singer and there isn’t a better classically trained Opera singer on the planet more suitable than the stunning Katherine Jenkins to be the first.

Miss (soon to be Mrs) Jenkins recently released a cross-over LP incorporating a slightly more mainstream and accessible sound entitled Daydream so the timing couldn’t be better!

To term ‘not just a pretty face’ was invented for acts like Katherine and it was not only absolutely incredible to watch, it was a huge honour to have her join us and as she says on her Twitter, ”For all you music lovers, I would highly recommend subscribing to the Mahogany Sessions….”

Can’t argue with that!

Greymatter

Posted on Friday, October 28, 2011 in House

Brighton-based producer Graham Luckhurst aka Greymatter is definitely a producer on the up. After an impressive performance with his last track ‘Tesla’, he has stepped up his game and released ‘Give It To Me Slow’ – a storming infectious house track with deep and hypnotic vocals.

Available now with other goodness from Fantastic Man and Medlar on the latest EP from Brighton label Wolf Music, Wolf 9.

POW! // Synkro

Posted on Friday, October 28, 2011 in Dubstep, Electronica, Producer of the Week

Manchester’s Synkro has been developing a unique style of emotional bass driven electronic music for the last few years. His tracks have been shown love from lots of big name producers like dBridge, Instra:mental and – champion of all things bass music – Mary Anne Hobbs. Like Burial before him, Synkro’s tracks use chopped ‘n’ screwed R&B vocals to create haunting ambient melodies.

All kinds of beats come through in Synkro’s tracks, including jungle, garage, 2-step and dubstep, a mixture of influences that turn The xx’s ‘Night Time’ into something altogether heartbreaking.

The xx – Night Time (Synkro Remix)

As a producer Synkro is not defined by one tempo, but his tracks are rarely more moving than when he slows them right down. Tracks like the beautiful ‘Memory’ are bliss.
