The Wombats (Plastic Plates Remix)

Plastic Plates is currently one of the most sought after producers when it comes to official remixes after a slew of successful commissions from acts like Adele, Sia and Body Language.
Now The Wombats have enlisted the Australian (who now resides in Los Angeles) to go to work on their upcoming track, Our Perfect Disease, taken from their most recent album The Modern Glitch.
Another top piece of work from Plastic Plates aka Felix Bloxsom and any new remix that comes out of PP HQ is always exciting.

Grass Roots @ 1948

Over the past two to three years almost every major brand, company and service that I can think of is investing their time and money into music and I welcome it as any and all interest in what some say is a ‘dying industry‘ is surely a positive.
Nike’s concept space in Shoreditch called 1948 laid host to a fortnight of music-centric BBQ sessions titled Grass Roots which managed to squeeze in just before the end of the so called British ‘summer’.
The first event featured sets from Hudson Mohawke and Raffertie whilst Blood Orange had the crowd in his palm with a seriously great live performance, finishing with Sutphin Boulevard.

Two weeks later, the second in the Grass Roots series kicked off with an even stronger lineup which welcomed the likes of Is Tropical, Alex Clare and all the way from NYC, Santigold!

Mr. Clare’s voice never fails to send dozens of shivers down my spine whenever I hear him and his set was incredible as usual and included our favourite tracks of his, Hummingbird.

Santigold was by far the biggest name of the night however and the crowd surge for the artist (now under Jay-Z’s Roc Nation management) was by far the largest and the highlight had to be getting half the crowd on stage for the last track.

Justice?

Not sure about you boys and girls, but I’ve found both new Justice tracks from the upcoming album to be middle of the road and quite frankly boring.
The latest track ‘AUDIO, VIDEO, DISCO’ just doesn’t go anywhere or do anything. My feet didn’t tap, head didn’t nod and I can’t imagine having the balls to drop this during a DJ set and expect it to make an impact.
With Civilisation, the premiere on the Adidas All In advert campaign was perfect thanks to incredible footage and editing (including editing of the song itself) but the actual music video was completely overtaken by the sound of boulders smashing and all sorts so you could barely hear the fucking song!
A commenter on Stereogum said “wow this video is almost as underwhelming as the song? what happened to the old justice, with attitude + funk + dirt“.
Sort it out chaps.

Fat Freddys Drop – Flashback (Jazzanova Remix)
A friend dropped this one on Saturday at a little late night house gathering.
Wow.

Jay.Soul

Jay.Soul divides his time between Amsterdam and Shanghai, which ultimately points toward a deep appreciation for chicken chow mein and rizla king skins however it’s music which takes the fore.
We featured his Midas Touch/Milly Elliot blend on our Live Mix #1 which led to some more investigation into his productions and below are some stand-out edits from his SoundCloud.

Introducing… Keaton Henson

Keaton Henson is a very intriguing musician.
The 23-year-old songwriter, artist and poet from London might never have released his self-produced music if it wasn’t for a very close friend who pressured him into putting the tracks online.
Having written and recorded his music in his bedroom following a traumatic break-up, his songs have received an incredible reception from around the globe considering that up until this point he’s had no management or promotion.
Despite the haunting beauty of Keaton’s music, fans may never see him play live in concert due to his “over-active fear gland”. Speaking about his first live show to a 2,000 strong crowd at Sadler’s Wells, Henson recalls “Everyone was saying the adrenaline would kick in, but it just didn’t. The audience were so supportive and even quite emotional, but I couldn’t understand why they were staring at me. I sang again the following night and then told the company I just couldn’t do it anymore.”
Fortunately, after seeing the intimacy of our Mahogany Sessions, we’re in talks with Keaton to film a session toward the end of September.
His debut single, ‘You Don’t Know How Lucky You Are’, out on October 24th will be followed by his first album titled ‘Dear…’ early next year.
Download the track below and watch the video for Charon – both completely had me in their grips and I look very forward to meeting him later this month.

Mahogany’s Founder & Editor on BBC 6 Music
I mentioned last week that BBC 6 Music invited me onto Now Playing show presented by Tom Robinson to talk a bit about the blog and the sessions as well as bring three songs that I’m currently in love with.
It was a really good experience, everyone on the show was lovely and to be on a station that I admire so much was an absolute honour.
Have a listen below!
