Bon Iver – Holocene (Video)

Posted on Friday, August 19, 2011 in Video

There’s something about Bon Iver’s first album, For Emma Forever Ago, and the low-budget marketing spend that followed which added a special dimension for me.

The lack of professional music videos but abundence of online sessions and concerts allowed for every fan to imagine and depict scenes in their own head. I felt that I had a lot of control over the album and the experience felt unique and personal.

Calgary and Holocene, whilst well directed, aren’t my cup of tea and don’t align with that I believe Bon Iver to be.

Of course I still have unbelievable love for Justin Vernon and his band.

We’re always striving to give you the biggest range of musical wonders on the Mahogany Sessions and we were over the moon when Quantic joined us during the UK leg of their European tour.

British born Quantic aka Will Holland and band the Combo Barbaro (lit. group of barbarians) had just finished their pre-gig rehearsal in Hackney and were geared up for an impromptu session on the industrial backstreets of East London.

They played No Soy Del Valle, which I think translates to ‘I’m Not From The Valley’ with their stunning vocalist and fantastic energy.

World music is so massively important and we’re going to be bringing similar artists to the sessions as the weeks and months roll on.

Thank you Quantic!

Introducing… Lovebirds

Posted on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 in House

Point Blank FM dropped a huge track not long ago and I failed to find out who was playing which led to a pain-staking month trawling around the depths of the internet until I fortunately found it.

The track, by German producer Lovebirds (aka Sebastian Doering) is without doubt our favourite house track of the year so far and the smile and warmth that I get each time it’s played is unmeasurable.

Stee Downes provides the vocals on the 8-minute tune and the response so far has been huge. To truly appreciate this one you can’t play this through rubbish laptop speakers – get this one plugged in people.

Lovebirds – Want You In My Soul ft. Stee Downes (Club Mix)

Such great work only prompts further investigation and as this post was written he dropped two previously unreleased bootleg remixes of James Vincent McMorrow which were turned down by the label as McMorrow isn’t one for dance music – understandable but luckily he’s put them out anyway.

It’s well worth a further inspection so head to his SoundCloud for more.

As the sun set at Lounge on the Farm and the festival reached it’s final day, we met up with one of the finest male solo artists in the UK, Marcus Foster. The timing for the session couldn’t have been better as next month he releases his long-awaiting new album, Nameless Path.

So, in the same blueberry field as Michael Kiwanuka, Marcus played his heart out as the sun began to go down.

We were blown away by his timeless voice then and we still are now.

Youth

Australian producers have featured a dozen times recently on Mahogany and we’ve massively appreciated the quality music that’s currently being exported from down under.

Youth aka Luke Foskey put out this ‘Young Edits – Moving Me Up’ release not long ago and it’s a gorgeous balearic journey including a lovely Kate Bush re-edit and our favourite, How We Walk On The Moon.

Check out his other releases via his SoundCloud but above all, kick back and enjoy these 4 beauts.

Otis?

Posted on Friday, August 12, 2011 in Rap/Hip-Hop, Video

So, I just watched the first official music video from the Jay-Z & Kanye West LP ‘Watch The Throne’ and something just didn’t seem quite right.

The video for the track which is meant to serve as a tribute to the late legend Otis Redding (the song samples Try A Little Tenderness) features the two rap heavyweights in a warehouse district speeding around in a $200,000 Maybach with scantily clad girls in the back. That’s about all that happens.

Considering how art house their videos of past have been (think Kanye’s Power and Jay-Z’s 99 Problems) they’ve missed a major opportunity to tastefully present a black music pioneer to a hugely popular young market all around the world.

I even think the use of the word ‘nigga’ in the lyrics is slightly inappropriate considering the racial divide and impact that particular word had back in Otis Redding’s day.

Certainly an opportunity missed but at least Otis’ family get a nice royalties cheque in the post.
