In The Mix(tape) – Homework

Posted on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 in In The Mix(tape) ©

Homework put together an absolutely blinding mix just under a year ago and, well, wow. It manages to hit every button for me.

Apart from Nicolas Jaar and Tornado Wallace, I’ve never heard of any of the Dutch duo’s selection which is what you want from a mix in many respects. Now I can spend the week trawling through the various artists only to discover more worlds of music.

Above all it’s a progressive house mix but the range and variations are immense and the minute it finishes, it’s going on again.

Homework – Naked Lunch At The Beat Hotel

1. Paul Frick – Something Blue – Kalk Pets

Chad Valley

Posted on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 in Electronica, Remixes, Video

Chad Valley has received two posts here in the past week, albeit indirect but nonetheless the release of his new music video (directed by Lucy Bridger) granted a proper piece.

I instantly fell in love with his sound. It’s tropical chillwave, melancholic electronica and other nice sounding dual-word names that you deem appropriate. His original productions feature is own vocals and take you on a bit of a journey each time you listen – an artist you’d expect to see alongside the likes of Toro Y Moi at a festival or gig.

Chad Valley – Fast Challenges

Chad Valley is Hugo Manuel. Another musical disciple from Oxford, UK. A town that has spawned an array of intelligent, interesting artists like Foals, Fixers, Stornaway and Trophy Wife. The last of which recently remixed the latest single it’s a bit of a treat.

Chad Valley – Now That I’m Real  (Trophy Wife remix)

The beauty is also within the remixes and Penguin Prison was given a complete makeover on vocals and tempo to result in a very different but very nice track.

Penguin Prison – Golden Train (Chad Valley Remix)

Above all, he’s created a sound that works for him and that we (and many others) love which is exactly what he set out to do in the first place.

Keep an eye out for him.

Get People

Posted on Tuesday, June 14, 2011 in Electronica

The first thing someone said to me as they walked past was “is this a finally a decent Klaxons tune?”.

Whilst there are elements of similarity in their tropical electric pop music, Get People are their own band with their own sound and the video for Rain Tears marks the upcoming sophomore EP release of the same name.

Released on Friends vs Records on July 11th, the trio (Dom, Casper and Martin) are just in time for the summer festivals and as a taster of what’s to come, they’re giving Away one of the tracks for free.

Chief call it quits!

Posted on Tuesday, June 14, 2011 in Alternative, News

Tonight marks the last ever show for Californian 4-piece Chief and a sad day for music on a whole.

For “creative and personal reasons” the guys have decided to disband and go their separate ways which sometimes ends up better but we’re gutted not to get any more of their music through.  When we first blogged about Chief we cited them “one of the most exciting bands to emerge over the past year” and that still stands.

The guys had a fantastically natural folky sound and looked the part as well. Their debut release (through Domino Recordings in Europe) received glowing reviews and their gig at the Barfly in Camden was so full it was uncomfortable.

Mahogany spend the afternoon with them at Lounge on the Farm festival and they were a top bunch.

Check out the Facebook event, and if you’re in West Hollywood tonight, head down!

Wish You Were Hear #2 – See You Soon

As much as the modern Coldplay don’t do it for me, the older Coldplay material can be great.

Would have loved to have been here.

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs (Chad Valley Remix)

Posted on Monday, June 13, 2011 in Electronica, Remixes

TEED’s latest single has been remixed by Oxford-based Chad Valley and it oozes with chillwave loveliness.

Trouble precedes the upcoming debut album release for Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs (due out on July 4th) who has recently signed to Universal Music’s Polydor subsidiary who also look after the likes of Jamie Woon.

As for the video, TEED continues his trend of wearing beautifully elaborate headpieces designed exclusively by Yunus and Eliza and it’s well worth a watch.
