Marques Toliver
We briefly posted on Marques before but we’ve just received his latest single, which he’s giving away for free, so here’s the updated post.
It’s a little more commercial than the rawness witnessed on his Jools Holland performance but at the same time a larger production tracks have their place just as much.
As for Marques Toliver, we’d never heard of the former busker from New York until 2011 but he’s being on the scene for some time now with upcoming performances at SXSW, Camden Crawl and Great Escape as well as heaps of festivals.
2011 could well be the year for him.

Belleruche
Belleruche just dropped their latest single as they prepare for their SXSW showcases next week (gutted we’re not there this year) as well as an artistically directed video to accompany it.
Here’s a snippet from the press release…“3 Amp Fuse” epitomises the London trio’s knack for fashioning a sound that is both catchy and unusual, and cooks up the perfect pop storm; opening with emphatic kettle drums and a driving bassline topped off with Kathrin deBoer’s bittersweet, world-worn vocals and suspenseful, staccato strings, it builds to a shuddering crescendo in three minutes on the dot.
Couldn’t have put it better ourselves.

Brand New Classixx
Classixx have just dropped their brand new studio track, Into The Valley, and it’s a joyously soulful tune.
Featuring Karl Dixon, the track is available to download for free via Green Label Sound and is a surely just a taster of what’s to come from the LA duo this year.

Exclusive – Adele (Neon Lights Remix)
The Neon Lights was at the Number 1 spot of our Best Remixes of 2010 list (as posted on Mahogany) and 2011 has a lot of in store for the London-based producer.
With full support and radio play from the likes of Radio 1′s Zane Lowe and Nick Grimshaw, his remixes of The xx and Warpaint are huge hits online and next artist to be given the treatment is Adele.
It’s a beautifully bass heavy affair and Adele’s vocal’s ride the wave with serious class.
The remix is a Mahogany Blog world exclusive, so listen to and download below!

Where Does Your Mind Go?
In The Mix(tape) – Space Dimension Controller
If I were an astronaut (which would mean I would have had to actually studied at school), then my soundtrack as I exit our atmosphere is as important as the oxygen supply.
Space Dimension Controller’s mix for FACT last year is now the official choice for the Mahogany Space Program, due to take off in 2022.
Such a good mix, starting with his debut single which is stunning.

Mahogany Minute with The Jezabels
We grew up… the same way most people do I guess. Sam, Hayley and Heather started their lives in or around Byron Bay, on the North Coast of NSW. I was born and grew up in Southern California until I was fifteen when I moved to Australia.
Now you can find us in… Sydney. All of us ended up at the same university which is how all of this came about. By this time Heather and Hayley had been making music together for a while, and Sam had been jamming with them for half a year or so. I met Sam through a cafe I was working at on campus.
It all started when… Sam was getting a coffee from me when he commented on the music in the cafe – we started talking about music and he mentioned that he and two girls were looking for someone to play the drums. I said sure, why not – and we had our first gig at the university band comp three weeks later. They actually registered for the band comp before they had a drummer, which ended up working out quite well!
If we’re not in the studio or on stage, you’ll find us… At work. We’re furiously writing for an album at the moment so it’s really all we have time for. We do manage to find time to go to the markets, museums, the movies – that kind of thing. I actually did some baking last night, I’ve convinced a friend to give me his old drumming practice pad in exchange for some home made biscuits.
We can’t perform unless we have… our instruments… and have done a group hug. It’s a bit cheesy but we tend to huddle in before we play and get psyched.
You’ll recognise us by our… music, hopefully. I’m not sure if there’s another way you’d want to recognise a band – maybe I’ll start dressing like Lady Gaga to attract some more attention.
Our first gig together was… at the university band comp. It’s a really great way to get some practice on a decently sized stage. It’s pretty funny to look back on, I was a bit nervous and probably had 1 too many beers. We made it through to the next round luckily – and I didn’t have as many beers that time.
We’re not really into hardcore industrial techno, but we do like Neil Young.
We wish we hadn’t… eaten those falafel rolls with garlic sauce, which was essentially puréed garlic, before our show in Bathurst. It’s so hard to put on a good show when you feel terribly uncool, burping up garlic on stage.
Our favourite festival is… either Wave Rock or Peats Ridge. We played Wave Rock in Western Australia late last year and it was incredible. Google a picture of it – it’s a very cool geological phenomenon; a massive rock shaped like a wave (as the name suggests). They set up a stage on the local camp site. Really great, friendly people were attracted to the festival and we had a great time.
It makes us happy when… we play a good show.
It makes us sad when… we play a bad show.
If there’s one thing we’ve learnt it’s… don’t be afraid of acquainting yourself with 4am starts. Earlier flights are cheaper.
If you’re new to our music, we suggest listening to the title track of our most recent EP. It’s hard to chose a single song that is representative of what we do – but I’m a fan of this one.
Our most recent release is the Dark Storm EP, and our next release is due Septemeber 2011 – yet to be titled, but it will be a full legnth. Thanks for taking an interest in our band!
All the best, Nik Kaloper (drummer in the Jezabels…)
