The Lost Lounge Sessions #1 – James Yuill

Posted on Thursday, January 13, 2011 in Mahogany Sessions ©

You may remember when we took the sessions to Lounge on the Farm festival in the UK in July and came back with exclusive performances from the likes of Chief, First Aid Kit, Josh Weller and more.

We also damaged the second hard drive with a host of other performances from the 3-day event which broke our hearts. Luckily (and finally) the data was recovered so over the next few days we’ll start releasing them on YouTube and as well as here so keep your eyes peeled for Lissie Trullie, Nimmo & The Gauntletts, Lucy Kitt, Xylaroo and this very special man, James Yuill!

We grabbed the Moshi Moshi artist unexpectedly just after his performance on the Saturday night and it wasn’t in the session schedule so we’d had a lot of booze (!) which can explain a few shakes here and there!

Trophy Wife

Posted on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 in Alternative

If there’s a band to watch out for in 2011, it’s Trophy Wife.

The boys hail from Oxford, the same place as Foals and you can definitely hear similarities in their music, mainly that both bands play some seriously intelligent music.

If you imagine Foals’ younger brother who was a little calmer but just as clever, you’ve got these guys.

They’ve giving an acoustic rendition of Microlite away in the run up to the release of their follow up AA single ‘The Quiet Earth’ / ‘White Horses’ which is coming out through Moshi Moshi on Feb 28th.

Favourite Song of 2010 – Eyesdown

Posted on Saturday, January 8, 2011 in Electronica, Video

Thought against creating a long list of best albums or songs of 2010 – there were far too many but I think it’s safe to say we’ve come to the conclusion of what was our favourite original song of the year.

Bonobo’s last album, Black Sands, was a triumph and the lead single is definitely his best non-instrumental song to date and after clocking up hundreds of plays, we’re still not tired of it whatsoever.

The album version contains so many different musical tastes and flavours – instantly incorporating elements of garage and 2-step and a bassline that can be felt deep in the chest when it’s turned right up but despite all that, it remains a very chilled out affair, retaining Bonobo’s trademark rhythms and sounds.

The track was the commercial debut for singer Andreya Triana (the chosen female vocalist for the LP), who succeeded Baja from the Days To Come album and adding her own beautiful, sensual touch to a few songs.

Remember, we’re not declaring it as the ‘best song of 2010′ or anything like that – that’s a little too opinionated. This is just our favourite!

That was the music video and therefore the radio edit which we’re not so keen on but it’s a seriously visual treat. For the album version, check this link.

Do It Like A Dude (Remixed)

Here are a couple of interesting unofficial remixes of Jessie J.

To be honest, I wasn’t that keen on the Jessie J stuff until watching her performance on Jools Holland which completely blew me away – since then I’ve looked at her music in a different light and wish the girl all the best in the world.

8BarZ have whisked up a good little remix here – not too dissimilar to the original but it’s got essence of ‘filth’ at parts which is what you need on a Friday, right!?

Secondly is a pair of fairly unknown producers who have taken the song to a entirely different place…

In The Mixtape – Penguin Prison

Posted on Friday, January 7, 2011 in In The Mix(tape) ©

Any mix from Penguin Prison is welcomed with open arms and he’s just released what must have been his NYE set list which makes us wish we were wherever the hell he was when the clock chimed 12!!

Tensnake, Yacht and Midnight Magic feature alongside some other steller tunes and a couple of his own remixes.

PP has a very specific taste in music when it comes to these mixes, and that taste chimes with us 100%.

Saturday night’s musical entertainment – check.

Mahogany Minute with Little Comets

Posted on Thursday, January 6, 2011 in Mahogany Minute ©

We grew up…in a house with a garden and a shed. Me and Mickey turned the shed into a fortress and by the time we were ten we would write songs inside it and post them to local radio stations. This all happened in Jarrow, Tyne and Wear. Who knows how Mark and Matt began.

It all started when…we meet in a greengrocers shop over the butternut squash. I had a Saturday job and Michael would deliver walnuts and other such things. Mark and Matt are cousins so came in looking for fruited wonderment. We had David Bowie on the ghettoblaster and just started talking about music, grapes and courgettes. Aeons later we started a band together!

If we’re not recording or playing music you’ll find us…playing a game we’ve invented like: Chastity Hammer (find an abandoned building and throw a claw hammer at the wall, if it sticks you get a point, points are lost for peripheral damage), Coinbombing (a variation of dodge ball combined with stone-skimming with two teams of players sitting opposite on leather sofas, at least two tables and four chairs must separate each couple), Pro-barricade Building (secure a given location). Other than that we’ve been spending a lot of time recently doing an advent calendar on the facebook page, with things like this.

We can’t perform unless we have…practised lots and have taken some water. It helps if we’ve been allowed to put our percussion line up above the stage too. Some venues think it is a spontaneous fire-hazard….

One country we’re dying to play live in isGermany. We’ve been to Berlin before and it is a  lovely place. Ideally we’d start small before one day recreating the Hasselhoff gig when the wall came down.

Our three dream festival headliners would be…David Bowie (because he is the king of the modern world and would have a tour bus to match Xerxes I), Paul Simon (from quite a few years ago because he is little knacked now) and a Bob Marley / John Lennon duo – can you imagine that!

You’ll recognise us by ourself-decorated van, gaudy jumpers (Rob), bad attitudes (Matt), general cleanliness (Mark), and Neumann Mic Collection (Mickey).

We wish we hadn’t…signed to Columbia Records. It was like working for a bank, but without the perks or access to people’s accounts.

If there’s one thing we’ve learnt it’s…that you should try to learn how to do as many things as possible for yourself. Learning to record, do artwork, make videos and write in roughly coherent sentences has given us a much greater level of intimacy with our music (if that makes sense)… it makes it really personal, and we really care – hopefully this comes across a little bit in what we produce.

Give us 30 minutes and we’ll cook a great…meal. Mickey would choose some lovely olives and make some bread for a starter, I’d make a little red onion and goats cheese tart, Matt would curate the wine list and whack up a roast loin for main course, whilst Mark would no doubt make a clafoutis for pudding!

Buy us a drink and…we’ll say thank you for buying us a drink. Then probably offer to buy you one later, then realise that really we should have just bought our own drinks. Then go on the quizzer and curse the machine for giving us shit questions.

We’re not really into metal, but Matt does like Metallica.

Our latest release… is Joanna on the 17th of January and our album In Search of Elusive Little Comets on the 31st of January. You can pre-order it here ;) .
