Mahogany Minute with Penguin Prison

I grew up…in Manhattan on 76th street between 2nd and 3rd avenues. After College I moved to Mercer Street and now I live in Washington Heights.
It all started when…my Mom put me in a music class when I was 2 years old. The teacher called my Mom one day and told her that I was beating the drums and had rhythm. Then a little later on in junior high school, I was in a gospel choir at the Professional Performing Arts School and that really helped to put me on a certain musical path.
If I’m not playing music you’ll find me…watching boxing, NY Knicks basketball, tennis, biking in the streets of NY.
I can’t perform unless I have…all of my equipment and the rest of my band? I can perform wherever, whenever. I don’t need any special circumstances really.
My three dream festival headliners would be…Wu-Tang Clan circa. 1996, Bob Dylan circa. 1976 and Fela Kuti circa. 1975.
You’ll always see me wearing…stripes. I have a lot of striped shirts. And pants. But not with stripes. I don’t wear shorts ever.
I wish I hadn’t…I guess there are some things I have said in my life that I wish I hadn’t said because they weren’t nice. But these things help make us better people because we think about them and feel bad and try to not say things like that again.
If there’s one thing I’ve learnt it’s…to ask questions. To put a lot of thought into almost everything.
Give me 10 minutes and I’ll cook a great…I don’t really cook anything. Oops. My girlfriend cooks for me sometimes. I think the only thing I can make is eggs. Sorry!
Buy me a drink and I’ll…buy you one. It’s the least I can do. If I drink more than 5 drinks though I might start saying things out loud that I shouldn’t.
I’m not really into anti-folk, but I do like Jeffrey Lewis. His lyrics are really great and when he performs live he has these huge comic books that he ‘performs’.
My favourite food is…I like all kinds of food. As long as it’s very good. I think I might be a “foodie.” When you grow up in NYC it just kind of happens.
My favourite smell is…a basketball. I don’t know why. I like how they smell. I also like the way the booklet inside a CD smells when you first open it up after buying it.
My next release will be…Golden Train. Out November 22. It’s a disco, pop, electronic sort of Michael Jackson meets Hot Chip kind of song I made with Alex from Holy Ghost!

Mahogany Rap Sessions // Ty
Ty has stood out within the UK hip-hop scene for over 10 years now and still remains one of the best lyricists around.
His latest album, Special Kind of Fool, continues his mode of fresh and contemporary beats and first-rate poetics.
Ty did something he “doesn’t usually do” and broke down the third track from his LP into two acapella verses in a quiet mews in North London, exclusively for Mahogany.

Mansions On The Moon

There’s a trend we’re noticing…the music we receive seems to be getting better as temperatures outside get colder. Artists and producers are staying at home or in the studio to avoid the icy chills and productivity goes up as a result.
It makes the autumn/winter periods at Mahogany HQ that bit more bearable!
On that note, may be present Paradise Falls. A singe track album by Mansions on the Moon featuring beautifully produced re-workings from the likes of Washed Out and Deadmau5 woven alongside superb originals.
It’s presented by Benzi & Diplo however Lane Shaw, Ben Hazlegrove (of Pnuma Trio) and singer/songwriter Ted Wendler are at the helm of the production.
The 12 tracks are designed to play back to back without interruption and it’s 30 minutes of seminal musical ingenuity and you can download it for absolutely nothing via their SoundCloud page or website.
We’ve got two tracks from the release to wet your appetites!

Dear North Carolina
Taking samples from popular pop and rock songs is no new feat within the hip-hop community however I don’t tire of it, if it’s done well that is.
Rapper Eddy B and Producer Tim Gunter of North Carolina have set out to put their State back on the rap map and their latest mixtape ‘Dear North Carolina, Welcome Back’ is something very special considering these guys are still in college.
Gunter’s production is extremely tight, watertight even and Eddy B’s lyrical delivery is sharp, fresh and original. The 16-track release features a host of strong originals as well as tracks with gorgeously blended samples taken from R.E.M., Coldplay, The Doors, Ellie Goulding and more.
The entire mixtape can be download for free on DatPiff which you can get to via this link.
In the meantime here are three of our favourites but it wasn’t easy to choose!

Mahogany Minute with Liam Bailey

I grew up…in and around Nottingham City.
It all started…at the Queens medical center in March 1983, when Mother Bailey gave birth to me.
If I’m not playing music you’ll find me…at home or out and about with myself or friends. Doing what normal people do I guess.
I can’t perform unless I have…my soul and passion.
My three dream festival headliners are…The Beatles, Led Zeppelin & Funkedelic.
You’ll always see me wearing…my skin?? Oh and my black jeans I guess.
I wish I hadn’t…had so many broken hearts and listened to so many lies in my past and present.
If there’s one thing I’ve learnt it’s…trust your instinct and the instincts of the friends & lovers around you.
Give me 10 minutes and I’ll cook a great…a great English breakfast or pasta dish.
Buy me a drink and I’ll…say thank you.
I’m not really into heavy metal, but I do like Metallica.
My favourite food is…Bacon. Oh yes the Devil’s treat.
My favourite smell is…Bacon!
My most recent release is an E.P called 2am Rough Tracks out on iTunes and so on.
