Mahogany Minute…Kellee Maize
I grew up…in Central Pennsylvania in between a bunch of farms and colleges. So I was around a lot of hippies and rednecks. But I love mother nature and I can pee outside without a problem so I do see my experiences as a plus. I have been in Pittsburgh for a long time though and feel like I became an adult here.
It all started when…my Mom says I was dancing and singing before I could walk and talk. I had a rap group when I was 9, it didn’t last long but I have always been performing on some level. When I got to Pittsburgh in ’98, I started writing a lot more and building confidence to record.
If I’m not recording or playing music you’ll find me…working with my company Nakturnal or doing some kind of spiritual work/study or better said by my friend, “doing woo woo shit”.
I can’t perform unless I have…WATER! I drink a ton of water before, during and after.
You’ll always see me wearing…Gemstones, to help me get through the day. I usually wear jewellery or have my chakra stones in my bag. They are from the earth and carry properties that can amplify energy, transmute negativity, heal and much more.
I wish I hadn’t…only recorded two albums so far. I think of all the full notebooks I have and wish I could have recorded like 5 so far. But I’m working on it.
If there’s one thing I’ve learnt it’s…what you think about expands. Focus on what you need and want. And, the most powerful thing we have is the energy we send out into the world, so work hard to make sure it is positive, productive and meaningful.

I’m not really into Heavy Metal but I do like Metallica.
My favourite food is…Mac n Cheese, pickles, olives and tabbouleh.
My favourite smell is…Nag Champa.
My next release will be a video for the song on my album called Godette within the next few days and a single called ‘I Insist’. I am constantly recording at this point.

Kellee is so down to earth, and this interview proves that! Her music is amazing and so inspiring, and I love that she candidly talks about her life. It makes her real, not like some of the big stars today who seem like they aren’t real people.
I love how Kellee takes everything in her life as a lesson. She embraces her her past, and focuses on her future, taking life as it comes. She’s a talented addition to the rap world, and is bound to stand out with her unique sound. Her lyrics are unlike any other rapper out there and is sure to change people’s opinions on rap and on female artists. Kellee is a true role model, she isn’t afraid to show who she really is.
I agree. I admire Kellee for not being afraid to just be herself whether people like it or not. People who are against her are only deep down insecure with themselves and need to learn a thing or two from Kellee. If everyone was as down to earth as Kellee Maize is then I definitely think the world would be a better place. I love her music and all that she stands for and if you don’t then you’re missing out!

Although not everyone may understand Kellee’s message, it’s nice to know that there’s a rapper in the industry who is garnering considerable attention by putting out a positive message instead of getting attention for being ridiculous.
Kellee is my idol! Shes so inspiring, from her music to her outlook on life. I’m obsessed with her CD!!!

You can even tell just by this interview that Kellee is just a totally chill person. Really goes to show that she believes in what she’s singing about. I’m a fan.
I really enjoy reading blogs like this that allow you to enter the mind of an artist. It helps me to relate to the person and artist that Kellee truly is. Her album is amazing, with lyrics that embrace her beliefs and really showcase her personality.

What a unique artist! I have been turned off by the rap scene for some time and Kellee is a breath of fresh air for the industry. Finally, a positive message and image from an artist who knows who she is and where she came from. On top of all that, her music and sound is stellar. Never change Kellee!
