Folk Off!

Posted on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 in Indie/Folk

Folk is cool again and has been for quite some time. Or maybe it always was but some of us thought we were too cool for it?

Who knows as long as the music is good and today I’ve got a young man and a young lady both who possess exactly that.

First up is Johnny Flynn who has been on the map of all the UK’s best DJ’s for homegrown talent. The likes of Zane Lowe, John Kennedy and Huw Stephans are all big supporters and so are we. This particular track is from the upcoming album, Been Listening, out on Transgressive Records on 7th June.

As for the young lady, Alessi’s Ark possesses a dreamy voice and a hearty sound that could relax a hungry hyena on the blazing hot serengeti plains. Two new tracks from her – I do think Shovelling could do with being a minute or so longer.

Fenech-Soler

Posted on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 in Electronica, Indie/Rock, Remixes

Fenech-Soler rapidly became one of my favourite acts of the year and after catching them at SXSW I was completely smitten by the group.

Stop and Stare is out for release on April 19th on Moda Music but in the meantime they’ve decided to get our blood boiling by giving one of the remixes from the single away for free and it’s not a shit one either.

I hate when some bands give the most mediocre remix away and it rightfully generates no fuss whatsoever. This one is by The Fur and is packed with digital nutrients and vitamins and it only makes me tingle to think what other remixes will join the brilliant single.

I Need A Dollar

Posted on Saturday, April 10, 2010 in Soul/R&B, Video

Heard a new song on the radio this afternoon that made my ears twitch up like a deer in the forest during hunting season.

Going to spend the next 30 minutes listening to more of the man. I hope it’s all like this.

ps – the man in the picture IS NOT Aloe Blacc.

Mahogany Minute – Kick Up The Fire

Posted on Saturday, April 10, 2010 in Indie/Rock

We grew up…in Brighton and Italy. Sanch and I met when we were snotty nosed teenagers wearing baggy jeans and pining over Cameron Diaz in The Mask. Alan and Thom are Brighton boys.

It all started when…Sanch and I had been jamming for a few months playing around with ideas and I went on holiday to New York. I met all these awesome people who were really creative, positive and proactive about everything they were doing. As soon as I got back to London we had a chat and decided to invite Thom down to help us write a couple of tracks with a view to recording them as soon as possible. After that it all sort of snowballed. Alan jumped on board in January last year when Johnny Truant split after initially talking about managing us.

If we’re not playing music you’ll find us…I’d like to say getting drunk, starting fights and generally causing trouble. You’re more likely to find us angrily tapping away at our keyboards ill-advisedly ranting about things that upset us on our blog. Either that or getting drunk, avoiding fights and generally whimpering away from any impending trouble.

We can’t perform unless we have…something to tease Thom about. He once applied to some website to become a rent boy which kicked everything off. Any time there was an awkward silence during shows we made sure people knew about his secret ambitions. That joke got boring fairly quickly though so sometimes we make things up just because he’s too shy to protest.

Our three dream festival headliners would be…Cursive are collectively probably our favourite band and they are incredible live. It’d have to be a small festival though because you wouldn’t want to lose the intimacy Tim Kasher shares with his disciples. I’d say The Hives are still one of the best live acts around based on sheer charisma and I saw Frightened Rabbit recently who blew me away. They just left everything they had on stage so they could headline the closing night.

You’ll recognise us by our…facial hair. Definitely too much facial hair going on in this band. It’s unhygienic.

We wish we hadn’t…become involved in a bar brawl with coked up meathead bouncers and bar staff at one of our shows in East London. Sanch wound up being arrested and we lost some gear. Nasty experience. Regardless of who’s at fault if you get involved in anything like that the police take sides with the venue because it makes their job easier.

If there’s one thing we’ve learnt it’s…shop around when dealing with promoters. Too many promoters put on groups of artists who have nothing in common, expect the artists to do all the promotion for them and don’t even cover the cost of transport. They tend to walk away with a tidy profit at the end of every night. Arseholes.

Give us 10 minutes and we’ll cook a great…Thom allegedly used to be a chef but selfishly he’s never made any food for the rest of us.

Buy us a drink and we’ll…probably not buy you one back. We’re not very nice like that.

We’re not really into the whole folk scene but we do like Okkervil river and Frightened Rabbit who are both absolutely awesome.

Our next release will be…a mini-album/longish EP called ‘Equidae’. It’ll be out at some point this summer if everything goes to plan.

Brand New Natty

Posted on Friday, April 9, 2010 in Reggae & Dub, Video

Long time since I’ve heard anything from the Natty camp so it’s nice to see his return and some free new material packed with summer soaked dub sounds.

He’s got a new album fast approaching and a string of dates in the UK where he’ll be showcasing songs of old and new.

I do hope he sticks around for a while.

Days of Fire was his collaboration with Nitin Sawhney. The songs about the terrorist attacks in London. Powerful stuff although Natty needs to a loosen up a bit on stage. Seem his freeze slightly before on Jools Holland.

Mahogany Minute…Pugs Atomz

Posted on Friday, April 2, 2010 in Mahogany Minute ©, Rap/Hip-Hop

I grew up… in Englewood, Chicago. One of the more poverty stricken black neighborhoods in Chicago…I use to love riding the El from there you would see so much Graffiti on the rooftops etc…My Father played me records and my Mom taught me how to paint. I have so many great memories there from opening a Icee stand (my first biz lol), basketball, softball to my first Hip Hop parties I put on. I still go back often to kick it with my childhood friends and my oldman.

It all started whenI was in 5th grade with a poetry assignment about God, so the next day when I recited mine, everybody said “you’re rapping, he’s a rapper”. From that point it started to make more sense to me. My older cousin Segram was a slick MC and beat boxer he  showed me a few things. Then later around 17, 18, 19, I got heavy into freestyling and graf, sparing with people like Rhyme Fest, Juice, Anacron, and Kanye…and battling in any cypher I saw with my crew the Nacrobats. Around that time I started to write songs and make tapes for my friends.

If I’m not playing music you’ll find me…hosting CTA radio with my partner K Max every Wednesday from 9-12 am on the legendary WHPK. Shooting music videos, designing T-Shirts and album covers. Teaching with After School Matters or with a young lady down Michigan ave.

I can’t perform unless I have…DJ Intel, DJ Vadim, DJ Alo or DJ Pickel on the tables, and of course women in the front row. (I got alot of female songs ha).

My three dream festival headliners would be…Cody Chesnut (Circa. Headphone Master Piece), Saafir (Circa. 95,96) and Dave Chapelle.

You’ll always see me wearing…Polo & Benetton (I collect vintage stuff), or some Chicago labels like Jugrnaut, Enstrumental, Iridium.

I wish I hadn’t…recorded so many songs last year cos trying to put them all out this year is tuff.

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt it’s…I know nothing but to trust my gut. And try to always be a student.

Give me 10 minutes and I’ll cook a great…salmon, spinach and mashed potato plate.

Buy me a drink and I’ll…sell you a CD…but seriously that’s usually the start to an entertaining conversation.

I’m not really into Emotronic, but I do like Hudson Mohawke.

My favourite food is…Salmon, or deep dish cheese pizza (Gino’s East).

My favourite smell is…design markers, BBQ

My most recent album is…Roof Top and it’s available now on iTunes featuring Sadat X, Naledge, DJ Vadim and Black Spade.

My next release is...the ‘Kinda Like A Rapper’ album with Grant Parks. I also have this group called Gent$, we will drop our record May 1st, and this mixtape called Smokers Jacket with my homie Awdazcate will drop in a few weeks.
