Computer Club & Frankmusik

Posted on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 in Electro/Dance, Pop/Rock, Video

Have to be honest here. Loved Frankmusik’s take on pop music, turning the genre on its head with really strong vocals talents and a clear understanding of all his instruments not to mention his production skills.

That was until he signed to a major label. And it all just got a bit Kylie Minogue.

In Step and 3 Little Words (pre-signing to a major label) were some of my favourite pop-crossover tracks that year and it all seemed to be going so well for the boy until I witnessed the music video for the latter.

Doctors said it was a miracle that I survived the 6-storey fall after I dived out of the window as a result of watching 30 seconds of the video.

Anyway, the singles to follow were Confusion Girl and Better Off As Two and I’m not even going to criticise them but I will say this, they almost stooped as low as Just Jack, but nothing can stoop quite as low as that.

Now this isn’t just a post to slag off Frankmusik because he’s just collaborated with Computer Club on a new track called Losing Streak and this Ladies and Gentlemen could be path to the long road of redemption.

Essentially, Computer Club could save his career and more than anything, show the US audience what Frankmusik’s supposed to sound like!

It’s a wicked track – chimes Mahogany’s pop bells and we’re treated with a single version as well as an edgier electro version.

Headlock

Posted on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 in Dubstep, Remixes

Received a lot of filth this week so without further adieu here’s some more.

Esser’s Headlock has been given a complex reworking by the Midnight Conspiracy men and we like it. Alot.

It’s short and sweet at just under 4 minutes but doesn’t waste any time – still features the quirky audio samples from the original and I’d love to be the person dropping this at 3.15am in a stinky and sweaty club.

Diamond Chemistry

Posted on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 in Electro/Dance, Pop/Rock, Remixes

Let’s start the day with two remixes.

Firstly, Radioproof have made Marina & The Diamonds’ latest single Hollywood enjoyable with a gentle electro-tinged sound. Not keen on the original but I like this one.

Next up is Adam Freeland’s neon-clad electro-pop remix of The Chemists’ latest single, This City. The boys from Bristol are on tour with Fun Lovin’ Criminals at the moment (that would have to be fun). The remix is definitely a far pace away from the punchy rock original which you can check out on their MySpace.

Spanish Sahara

Posted on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 in Alternative, Indie/Rock

Foals’ first album is sitting comfortably in my best albums of all time list and I’ve got a feeling the new record could top the debut.

Spanish Sahara was exclusively aired for the first time on the Zane Lowe show and the video was released shortly after. It’s not the first single, due to be The Orient, but it’s a fantastic example of what they’ve been doing in the studio.

The sound is on the same par as Antidotes with noises we’ll all be familiar with but there’s a sense of progression and maturity in it and I cannot wait to hear the whole thing.

The album, Total Life Forever, is due out in May but we’ll all be hearing a lot more before that date drops.

We’ve had a listen and it’s a very interesting record – something that needs to be listened to a few times to really get a grasp of it but heavy sounds throughout.

Gin & Jeuce

Posted on Monday, March 1, 2010 in Electro/Dance, Remixes

The aptly named Juece boys from ‘Up North’ have just completed their latest works.

Now I don’t make music or play any instruments (yet) but artists/producers must feel a certain pressure to deliver when a label with such a strong background as Southern Friend officially drafts them to rework a single.

Juece were given Crookers’ reworking of Miike Snow’s In Search Of and we think they deserve a big pat on the back.

In The Mix(tape) – Baltic Bastian

Posted on Monday, March 1, 2010 in In The Mix(tape) ©

The producer of Holland’s The Sense of Dance radio show on BNN is a big fan of Mahogany and he’s sent us his latest mix.

Just looking at the tracklisting tells us that it’s going to be a treat and I’ve been waiting ages for a new mix that I really adore. What I like most is the range of different music presented here – it’s not a tour de force of brutal tracks because we’ve got The Whitest Boy Alive, Two Door Cinema Club and Animal Collective in there. It’s nice to see a non-restrictive list that chimes so many of my bells.

As for the radio show, Baltic Bastian produces a steller show every saturday night at 3am alongside host Ajouad El Miloudi.

This might take a bit of time to buffer due to the size but if you can’t download it, wait a few minutes and it will stream.
