Breakage Your Face

Posted on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 in Dubstep, Pop/Rock, Remixes

Florence is on top of the world at the moment – one of our first ever posts saw the fiery redhead perform for Steve Lamacq and since then she’s gone from strength to strength to strength.

We heard Breakage’s remix a while back but didn’t want to post anything unless it was at the highest quality so here it is.

Breakage’s seemingly simple yet aggresive approach to this remix builds and builds without digressing from too much from the original arrangement but still adding a much-needed punch in the face.

As for Breakage himself – the long awaited debut album, Foundation, will see another dubstep aficionado break through into the big spotlight.

Kidztomania

Posted on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 in Covers, Indie/Rock, Video

All I remember in music class when I was young was Frère Jacques and Kumbaya but it seems like that’s all about to change.

Gregg Breinberg and his class of New York kids aka PS22 Chorus have taken music or choir class to a whole new level. By adopting popular songs that most of the pupils know, they’ve added a new lease of life on a dying mandatory curriculum class and become an internet sensation at the same time.

Phoenix’s stand-out track from their last album is their latest project which you can watch below and we think it’s really really nice.

Who knows what’s next for PS22 Chorus but the sky’s the limit. Surely.

Mahogany Minute with Kyla la Grange

Posted on Monday, March 8, 2010 in Alternative, Indie/Folk, Mahogany Minute ©

I grew up…in Watford (just outside London) in a house full of South Africans, Zimbabweans and a big hairy alsatian dog.

It all started when…my parents bought me a violin. I hated it and refused to practise, but realised i loved music more than anything. Later on they bought me a guitar instead.

If I’m not playing music you’ll find me…going for a long run or putting on a one-man disco in my room.

I can’t perform unless I have…no shoes on and a glass of whisky.

My three dream festival headliners would be… Cat Power, Bright Eyes and Elliott Smith (it’s a dream so you can bring people back to life).

You’ll always see me wearing…clothes. Unless the day is hot and uninhibited.

I wish I hadn’t…cracked my little brother’s head open on the bathtub when we were little. (He’s ok now).

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt it’s…If you ever see a whole tiramisu left on the side of the road, definitely pick it up and definitely eat it.

Give me 10 minutes and I’ll cook a great…Moussaka. Though actually it takes about 2 hours.

Buy me a drink and I’ll…possibly forget to buy you one later.

I’m not really into Country, but I do like Dolly Parton.

My favourite food is…scrambled eggs and beans on toast.

My favourite smell is…caramelised nuts being roasted. quite specific.

My most recent release is…a free download of Vampire Smile!

Professor Green

Posted on Sunday, March 7, 2010 in Rap/Hip-Hop, Video

Professor Green seems to have taken a leaf out Mike Skinner’s book by removing the New Era cap and donning some nice clothes. It’s a much better image and not only broadens his audience but it also shrugs off the chance of being placed next to the Ying Yang Twins in the HMV aisles.

The new single will be paying much of its royalties to INXS but this is the song that will launch the Hackney boy’s career.

Catchy stuff.

Stylo Gets Twisted

Posted on Friday, March 5, 2010 in Dubstep, Remixes, Video

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed The Guardian’s exclusive preview of Gorillaz’ new album. It’s a good progession and to be honest, I didn’t even really listen to them before as fully fledged ‘group’. It was more the singles and concepts that I enjoyed.

CraigMak’s latest work is in the form of a Stylo remix and from what we’ve heard so far, it’s one of our favourites.

Speaking of Gorillaz, they’re planning to do live shows this year – I hope they’re accompanied by as many of the album guests and humanly possible. The façade of seeing characters on a screen wears off after the first tune. I’m optimistic that they won’t disappoint.

Stop And Stare

Posted on Thursday, March 4, 2010 in Electronica, Pop/Rock

It’s a rare(ish) and incredibly warm feeling when you hear a song that instantly clicks with you.

Just had that amazing spine-tingling experience with Fenech-Soler’s upcoming single.

With Kitsune written all over them, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that this will be the band for 2010.

Outstanding.

Wolf Gang

Posted on Thursday, March 4, 2010 in Alternative, Pop/Rock

University isn’t for everyone – it wasn’t for Mahogany and it certainly wasn’t for Wolf Gang who left the lecture halls of LSE for greener and more exciting pastures.

Instead he decided to make some music. Music that we think has a lot of potential for 2010 and beyond.

His new single, Back To Back, reminds us of early MGMT minus the Californian sunshine.

We’ll be keeping our eyes on this young man because it’s about time for a talented young male to balance the current industry strewn with female vocalists. We’re not being sexist but it’s time things evened out!
