Urbané Transformation

Posted on Friday, February 26, 2010 in Dubstep, Rap/Hip-Hop, Remixes

We’ve got some big tracks this morning – all of which have been transformed one way or another.

First up is a the new effort from DJ E whose mashup with The xx and Mims reminds me of the hugely popular Tupac and Biggie remix that we featured last year. The xx create the perfect backdrop for a really good effort despite my dislike for Mims.

Next up is another artist who I wouldn’t dream of listening to unless it was treated with some heavy beats to mask the lyrical soppiness. Luckily Maximus Baxter have injected some life into McLean’s latest single.

Let’s finish with one of the biggest mash-ups of 2009. It’s very nearly perfect.

Around The World…

Posted on Thursday, February 25, 2010 in Dubstep, Electronica, Remixes

We receive a ton of music from a huge array of artists all the time and we always feature what really grabs our attention.

The nice thing in many cases is that there is very little information about the artist/producer provided so there’s no space to make judgements – it’s the purest form of digestion and the best way to listen to new music. Reading a biography, looking at press shots or their homepage can dilute (if only slightly) judgments and opinions.

Mr Fogg dropped us his new single this week which has been remixed by the dubstep man of the hour Jakwob. It’s a beautifully leftfield and alternative dubstep remix and I’m about to go and listen to more Fogg!

Cover Up

Posted on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 in Alternative, Covers, Pop/Rock

I’m a big fan of Paolo Nutini since the release of his second album. To be honest I enjoyed some of his first album but I do think it was down to my age at the time but nevertheless the chorus-heavy catchy songs were on my old 3rd generation iPod for a good while. I’m hopefully going to catch him at the Royal Albert Hall in April and, I really hope I hear this brilliant Arcade Fire cover of Wake Up.

Another interesting cover but not as strong in my opinion is by Ellie Goulding whose certainly not shy of trying her hand at a range of covers including Bon Iver’s The Wolves (Act I & II) and Passion Pit’s Sleepyhead. She covers Temper Traps Sweet Disposition recorded from a gig and it’s good enough to make it on Mahogany but it’s by no means a desert island disc.

Dance with Lykke Li & Bon Iver

Posted on Saturday, February 20, 2010 in Alternative, Video

It’s a collaboration that got my blood boiling (in a very good way) when I first saw it.

Bon Iver and Lykke Li in an impromtu performance in an L.A. park.

I love both of them dearly and consider their debut efforts to be some of the best of the last 10 years and I really hope that get together again sometime. Although Bon Iver’s harmonies are beautiful, I would have loved to have heard him on the chorus of the song… Ah well.

The video is much more pleasing to watch but the MP3 is here for your downloading pleasure as well.

Stylo

Posted on Friday, February 19, 2010 in Rap/Hip-Hop, Remixes

When I first heard Stylo, I wasn’t keen at all but it’s Mos Definitely (ha) grown on me since and I’m more than ready for the album in early March.

Until we reach that point, Philly based Chiddy Bang have laid down their reworking and injected some more bars into it which is what many people have thought was missing from the original.

It’s a shame Mos Def’s presence is tertiary after Damon and Womack but it’s still a very solid song.

Thought we’d repost what first made Chiddy Bang’s online presence go off the chart.

Anyone think Gorillaz will headline Other Stage at Glastonbury this year? We do.

Mayday!

Posted on Thursday, February 18, 2010 in Indie/Folk, Remixes

Big fan of UNKLE and Swedish producer Mojib has officially been given the blueprints to Mayday, the 2007 song which features The Duke Spirits lead singer Liela Moss.

Here’s a bit about it from label Bad Panda Records.

”Mayday Revisited” is a one-off single from Swedish music producer Mojib (Staffan Ulmert). The track reconstructs the song ”Mayday” released in 2007 by UNKLE featuring The Duke Spirit. Using the vocals of Liela Moss the track is being mashed together with lo-fi indie act The Radio dept. Mojib then adds his own piano and acapella melodies. The result is a unique fusion of alternative indie, rock and electronica.

I couldn’t have said it better myself!
