Who Do You Love?

Posted on Friday, January 22, 2010 in Alternative, Pop/Rock, Video

It’s difficult to keep up with music when so many good tracks and albums are released every week, and overlooking perfect ear-candies is an art I’m sadly mastering.

That’s what happened with the track Who Do You Love by Museum Of Bellas Artes. It was released a few months ago, and I heard it for the first time this week. MOBA are a trio hailing from Sweden and working with Swedish pop label Force Majeure.

Who Do You Love is a cover the 1964 track originally performed by The Sapphires (the original version is pretty amazing too).

I don’t know much about MOBA, but I really enjoy this track (it slightly reminds me of Au Revoir Simone) and I hope you will too.

Humdrum Town

Posted on Friday, January 22, 2010 in Rap/Hip-Hop

2010 is undoubtedly the year for Theophilus London. He’s (quietly) reinvigorating hip-hop by taking a huge step away from the textbook new rapper that we so commonly see nowadays.

His influences, his style and his attitude are completely different and that’s what sets the Brooklyn native apart from the rest of the same sounding bunch that we’re so used to hearing on our airwaves.

We posted back in May after his This Charming Man mixtape was released and if you take a minute to listen – you’ll see exactly what we mean.

This new single is everything we could want in a track and we’re hungry for more!

Shane Meadows & Gavin Clark

Posted on Friday, January 22, 2010 in Alternative, Video

Upon first glace, in a dark alleyway somewhere up North, the look of Shane Meadows may startle you. Let’s not mess around, the guy looks like your average local thug who enjoys a fine glass of Stella Artois any day of the week.

That possible premature presumption is so far off the mark. He’s a incredibly smart and gentle giant who I consider to be one of the best British directors around.

A Room For Romeo Brass, This Is England, Somers Town and his most recent comedy mockumentary Le Donk & Scor-zay-zee are all fantastic films in different ways and Dead Man’s Shoes is one of the best horror/thriller films made in the UK. Ever.

Something Meadows is always praised for are his songs to his films which he personally selects  - they’re often from relatively unknown singers and bands and they all capture the scene/film/setting perfectly. The Somers Town soundtrack is entirely written and performed by Gavin Clark who you would have heard on UNKLE’s War Stories album and it’s amazing…

…so when I recently read that the two are teaming up for a low budget documentary, I was over the moon.

Speaking on his website last year, Meadows explains the concept for his new film …‘The idea came about a few weeks ago when I dropped in to see Gavin after Clayhill’s tour of America (supporting Beth Orton) and found him sat with the Yellow Pages looking for a job delivering Pizzas! It turned out that the Record company had ran out of money after the last album and had dropped the band that very morning. The idea of Gav delivering pizzas again at 37 made me wanna puke up and I got in touch with Mark (my producer) about trying to get the funds to make an album and short film that could get Gav known to a wider audience and hopefully get him re-signed as a solo artist in the process.’

I personally can’t wait to see Clark’s story behind Meadows’ camera and to get a taste of his talents here are a couple tracks from the Somers Town soundtrack.  I don’t think this is available anywhere else online or in-store and so I was umming and arring about whether to put the tracks up for free but I made to decision to do so simply to spread the word about the man.

Enjoy.

Oh Gosh Goulding

Posted on Wednesday, January 20, 2010 in Electro/Dance, Pop/Rock, Remixes

I know what you must be thinking: “Oh dear, yet another post about Ellie Goulding”.

The buzz surrounding the 23-year-old Welsh singer has been quite intense for a few months; her scintillating blonde locks splashed across music sections of various newspapers and magazines, and snippets of her songs heard as far as in Celebrity Big Brother… But in my opinion, Ellie Goulding deserves the attention.

The year 2009 was marked by brilliant full-on synthpop (La Roux), crystal-breaking voices (Florence + The Machine), and shameless near-eurotrash pop (Lady GaGa), so it’s no surprise Goulding’s haunting voice and soft folktronica arrangements found their very own delicate shelter with fans in a Niagara-esque music market.

Ellie’s worked hard to get where she is, and her gig at Cargo in London last month was a treat. Her next single, Starry Eyed, will be released sometime in February, and the debut album Lights is scheduled for March. Can’t bloody wait.

I’m DJ-ing at a night called Other People’s Property at the end of the month and I might play the Jakwob Remix of Under The Sheets!

Josh Garrels – 107

Posted on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 in Alternative, Indie/Folk

Ever since a lovely Mahogany reader recommended Josh Garrels to us on our Sleep Playlist post, we’ve been hooked on his incredible music.

I wish I had my own label so I could properly push him in the UK, I think it’s what everyone needs. Proper uplifting honest music from the heart.

His album, Lost Animals, from August is something I recommend to anyone and everyone so check out our previous post on the guy and see what you think.

This song is perfect for the walk to work on a crisp morning.

“Business Is Booming”

Posted on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 in Dubstep, Electronica, Remixes

January is proving to be a seriously productive month for producers and DJ’s around the world…tons of stuff pouring into the inbox over the past 2 weeks so it must be like a New Years Resolution or something.

I’ve got my doubts about 2010 – the smile on my face was savagely torn off today after watching Justin Bieber’s music videos – shocking. I hope its as good a year as 2009 was but mainstream going to way it’s going I’m losing hope early. Fucking Glee as well!

Anyway here’s a few of my favourite remixes of the past week.

BT – Every Other Way (DYM Remix) download

DYM’s first go at a big remix for a long time and he’s done seriously well. It’s like Diet Dubstep.

Fool’s Gold – Nadine (Ruckus Roboticus Remix) download

LA based tropical Fool’s Gold get the treatment by Ruckus Roboticus – never heard of the guy before but its a remix that will stay on my playlist for a while. He’s added a serious kick of fun to the track.

Lifford – Now Tonight (Maximus Baxter Remix)download

Producing duo Maximus/Baxter were 2 of the founding members of Rave group CLSM.  So combine their lightish dubstep noises with vocals from Lifford (vocalist on Artful Dodger’s “Please Dont Turn Me On) and you’ve got a winning remedy.

Here’s the YouTube clip link.

SOMEhelp And An Incredible Line-up

Posted on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 in Dubstep, Electronica, Remixes

While the relief effort in Haiti is a shambles at present – we can still do our bit to help and raise money for the already poverty-stricken country which was rocked by a catastrophic earthquake last week.

SOMEnight have teamed up with charity Ctrl.Alt.Shift and production outfit True Tiger and within 3 days, they’ve organised one of the strongest lineups ever which makes it look more like an indoor festival.

And whilst we all rave and have a good time – ALL proceeds from the night will go to the relief effort and aid in Haiti.

All the artists are playing free of charge and here’s what Wiley (headliner) had to say about it;

“When disasters like this happen it gives you a reality check and if there’s something we can do to help then we should all do it. An event like this shows that we’re able to come together and make a difference where it matters.”

The party will take place at SOME’s residency in London (The Den) but they’re also opening up it’s other club upstairs called Centro which has boosted the capacity to 1200.

Minimum donation on the night is £5 but you can put however much you like into the pot.

Check out the astonishing lineup above and also see the recent additions added in the last 24 hours below.

Nihal (Radio One)
Shy FX
Breakage
Sway
Mystery Jets (Dj Set)
MZ Bratt
Doorly
