Owl City Requires A Remix

Posted on Thursday, December 17, 2009 in Dubstep, Electro/Dance, Remixes

You see Owl City is just a little bit too American Sweetheart for me. A bit too High School playground.

A bit too pre-teen.

When I first heard it I thought it was Ben Gibbard from Death Cab For Cutie but after 10 seconds, I shut my hand in the car door as punishment for the thought.

Anyway I haven’t listened to anymore of his music and don’t plan to – the only saviour  are the remixes. And they’re not half bad.

Where Is My Mind?

Posted on Thursday, December 17, 2009 in Remixes

We’re big big fans of Bassnectar at Mahogany HQ – he’s one of the few producers of the dark musical arts that has stood out for us in a big way this year and it seems like Christmas is no deterrent for work as in drops a new remix from him this week.

I’ve never been a massive fan of The Pixies and I didn’t gather at the top a hill during full moon to celebrate their comeback gigs at Reading however after this remix I think I could be a changed man.

Who better to describe the track than Bassnectar aka Lorin…

“This is just a simple chunk of bass and beats, probably not dubstep because it is 20 bpm faster, probably not D&B because it doesn’t follow the rules, but its thick and deep and it should be yours. If you are a DJ and want a nice instrumental banger for your sets, this jam has some heavy bass and a nice clean beat loop at the beginning running at 85 bpm…perfect to thicken up any hip hop, drum & bass, dub, downtempo or dubstep track, also a nice little acapella synth at the end…”

Joy Orbison

Posted on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 in Electronica

Been hearing lots of buzz about UK producer Joy Orbison onlin and on radio and the buzz is fully justified.

The twenty-two year old from Croydon has gotten me very excited for next year. BBC Music added him to their Sound of 2010 list which is a strong sign considering how much the media giant has invested in music over the past 4 years.

BBC Radio 1 (past 7pm) is now a solid station and a first choice for me. Zane Lowe, Mary Anne Hobbs, Rob Da Bank and Pete Tong are all stellar DJ’s to tune into any day of the week.

Anyway, his productions have a strong sense of old school house and big elements of garage (especially in the vocal edits). It’s minimalist but each track is packed to the brim if that makes sense?

Mahogany Round-Up 2009 – Best Group & Album

Posted on Thursday, December 10, 2009 in Electronica, Pop/Rock

Best Artist and Album are two separate entities in the Mahogany Round-Up for 2009 but they’re both deservedly being awarded to the astounding group of musicians known as Miike Snow.

We’re not skipping corners by awarding Miike Snow with the Best Group and Best Album of 2009 – and here’s why…

As a Group they appeared out of nowhere and quietly released their debut album in early February – it was picked up by a few blogs and reviewers but had to real profile anywhere – 10 months down the line, it’s a completely different story.

Hailing from Sweden and the US, two of the members are coveted pop producers and songwriters known as Bloodshy & Avant (center and right) with a foot heavily wedged in the pop world. They’ve produced hits for Britney, Kylie and Madonna and whilst that may sound off-putting to some, only their wealth of experience in the music field has been transferred to Miike Snow.

I’m not entirely sure how they formed but along the way they recruited relatively unknown American musician and singer Andrew Wyatt who completes the perfect circle with his beautiful vocals. Having seen them play live a number of times, they are, for me, the most exciting band I’ve heard since I can remember. I especially love their shy and modest way toward the industry and the clear message that they’re not in it for the glitz & glam. They’ve made some other good albums this year sound ridiculously one dimensional.

Now as an album, I’ve listened to it countless times. Each time I get something a little different. I can focus on the incredible production and listen to the watertight structure of each song or I can focus on Wyatt’s traditional pop vocals (sometimes reminiscent of Prince) which are perfectly suited to each track.

From their chart friendly numbers like Animal and Song For Noone through to the beautiful electronic ballads In Search Of and Silvia – there really isn’t another album that has touched on so many places in such a way.

We’ve posted so many Miike Snow songs and videos this  so we’ll give you some recent live sessions they recorded for MySpace Transmissions that you may not have heard yet. If you’re already familiar with the album, listen to how seamlessly they extend the live versions.

Kanye West & The Beach Boys

Posted on Thursday, December 10, 2009 in Rap/Hip-Hop, Remixes

This has been in my music library since 2005 and I totally forgot I had it so you need to have it as well.

In true Dangermouse style, producer and MC Lush Life gathered together the Kanye West accapellas from his albums The College Dropout  and Late Registration and then took The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds record and sat in his studio until he emerged with some truly lovely and unique versions that deserve an applause.

Pet Sounds has that gorgeous, dreamy californian vibe and that’s not lost in this unofficial album.

My favourites are in order below.

In the spirit of all things mixed, here’s a nice little remix to add to the pot.

As for Kanye West, I watched that recent Spike Jonze short film in which West was the star of. Very strange piece of film – not sure what to make of it at all.

Enjoy!

The White Panda

Posted on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 in Electro/Dance, Remixes

A slight break amidst the Mahogany Best Of 2009 posts…Here are a couple of tracks from The White Panda whose mish-mashing talents have been applied to Will.i.am’s Donque track featuring Snoop Dogg and Sneaky Sound System’s Picture.

The White Panda aka Procrast and DJ Griffi are some of Hypem’s top artists this year so it’s clear they’ve got the magical remedy for underground energy.

They give tracks that extra ‘oomph’.

Speaking of Panda’s, I watched Never Mind The Buzzcocks the other night and David O’Doherty was a guest comedian. He was plugging his new book and it sounded hilarious. In the same style as Chuck Norris facts, the book has some hilarious information on the rare bears such as:

Pandas have no fingerprints. This is believed to be why they are used as accomplices in many jewel and bank robberies. International law enforcement agencies arrest around 700 pandas every year.

Mahogany Round-Up 2009 – Best Remixes

Posted on Tuesday, December 8, 2009 in Dubstep, Electro/Dance, Remixes

(pictured : Alex Metric)

So many remixes and more than enough time to enjoy them all.

2009 has been a bumper year for dance and it’s thousands of sub-genres. One of Mahogany’s main themes have been remixes so it wasn’t too difficult to get a strong list together.

Some remixes this year have just added a big baseline and that’s it. That’s lazy and in our book, doesn’t qualifying. It has to take the song to another level by any means necessary.

Here are Mahogany’s Best Remixes of 2009.

P.E.S.T & Florence & The Machine

Florence & The Machine – Rabbit Heart (P.E.S.T Remix)

We’ve championed Florence since the beginning of Mahogany and a good remix is always welcomed. This has been our favourite Florence remix from the many that surfaced and it achieved massive acclaim from Mahogany readers.

Check out the our first ever Florence post!

Foamo & Dub Pistols

Dub Pistols – I’m In Love (Foamo Remix)

Dub Pistols and Foamo have had a great year. Dubs released a brilliant new album and embarked on huge tour including a stop over in Barbados whereas Foamo is on speed-dial at all of the record labels’ HQs for his impeccable remix skills.

I’m In Love featuring Lindy Layton (remember Beats International?) has been given shocking remix treatment which I thankfully caught at Foamo’s set at Bestival this year.

Alex Metric & La Roux

La Roux – Quicksand (Alex Metric Remix)

Alex Metric is in our Mahogany Heads Up list for 2010 – he’s one of the most talented young producers out there and he’s already upped the game with full live performances and an upcoming feature length album (something we don’t see too often from producers).

La Roux has been remixed by everyone under the sun which is the only reason she gets any underground press. This remix is one of the few that stood out for Mahogany and is deservedly in our Best Remixes for 2009. As we stated above, the track has to be taken to a new level which Metric has done with ease.

Here’s a link to our Alex Metric post back in April.

Mark Ronson & Miike Snow

Miike Snow – Animal (Mark Ronson Remix)

Not a massive fan our Mark Ronson’s last album Version but there’s no denying his skill and his trademark brass instruments make a Ronson beat easily identifable.

I first heard this on the radio and the DJ didn’t mention any credits but everyone in the car instantly clocked who was behind it.

Miike Snow’s Animal has been flipped and flapped to an entirely new version and I’m pretty sure Andrew Wyatt (Miike Snow) has lend extra vocals for it.

Check out our first Miike Snow post.

More Mahogany Round-Up posts coming soon!!
