I Had The Blues…

Back in the very early stages of The Mahogany Blog we had two posts about Bombay Bicycle Club. Easily one of the most promising young bands in the U.K.
Finally their album is released and it’s a nice little gem but it more of a autumn/winter album.
You know when you’re playing music and it slips into the background as you do other things – but suddenly a song has that sound breaks your concentration. This was the one for me.
Bombay Bicycle Club – Autumn
Their album’s called I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose and it’s well worth a deeper listen.
Boring!!!

Can’t be arsed to talk about the media storm that’s currently brewing everywhere but I found this remix a while ago and to my horror realised it’s not up here yet.
There are some other really really strong Jackson remixes out there including a Jackson 5 one which is great but I can’t for the life of me find it.

Nickodemus And The Gypsy Soundsystem

I spent a good couple of hours in the Pussy Parlure (it’s not what you think!) at Glastonbury and they were playing some particular music that literally got everyone onto dancefloor.
The whole gypsy/middle eastern crossover into electro and house music is just what’s needed if you ask me – it almost got into the mainstream when Samim released Heater a couple of years ago but since then it’s remained mainly underground.
Nickodemus has championed the music for ages so let’s indulge.
Balkan Beat Box – Adir Adirim (Nickodemus Mix)
I checked out Nickodemus after this remix and he’s just released my new summer soundtrack song. The rappers featured are The Real Live Show and they sound a lot like Jurassic 5. Perfect.

Hide And Seek
Previously on TMB we posted the sick High Contrast remix of Imogen Heap’s Headlock and it got great feedback – the HC remix was quick and sharp which is great but sometimes we just want to sit back and relax.
Welcome aboard Enigma who has approached this remix with a ‘Less Is More’ approach and added a simple heavy bassline and some really nice soft vocal effects.
Imogen is about to return with her new album expected in August so looking extremely forward to that one.

Thanks to Sly Fly Records blog for posting this a while back.
Mt. Eden Filth
Oh my good god. Was sent this track earlier today and I’m blown away.
Jesse Cooper aka Mt. Eden likes to keep a relatively low profile and for good reason. He’s no doubt waiting until he has a complete arsenal of dubstep tracks to unleash onto the world.
Unlike a lot of the emerging dubstep artists, Mt. Eden is from a small suburb in the US New Zealand but he’s a beacon for the fact the genre is reaching all over the world now.
This track is a big one – very big one. Unbelievably dirty.

‘Carradine Style’

Just listened to the Miike Snow album twice and I’m completely in love with it.
I want to take it out to dinner and flirt over the most expensive meal on the menu whilst drowning it in white wine and then take it to a bar to soak it in at least 14 mojitos followed by the most outrageous David Carradine-style romp back at my place.
I can’t do that. Firstly, I haven’t got a physical copy of the album – just mp3 format and secondly it’s just completely ludicrous.
What I can do though is put a remix and a video up – I’d love to put the entire album up but that’s not what this blog’s here for…This blogs meant to inspire you to buy the album. Which in this case, I think a few of you might actually get the plastic out.
The band are from Sweden and before comprising this pop-electro-soul-folk masterpiece they were producers with a heavy belt of big tracks including Britney Spears’ Toxic and a few Kylie Minogue hits. Although Miike Snow sounds like a solo project it’s actually the name of a Japanese film director.
They’re playing a few dates here and there – Hoxton Bar & Grill in London on the 14th of July is where I will be. Tickets are about a fiver!

Breathe In, Breathe Out

The long awaited debut album from Florence & The Machine was released today (6th July) and I thought I’d put it through it’s paces as I walked to work.
Kiss With A Fist, Rabbit Heart, You’ve Got The Love and Dog Days are already very familiar to many of us, so in a sense I wish I was hearing all the songs for the first time as a complete package. I find myself skipping through the album to hear songs I don’t know.
The songs I haven’t heard do make up for it however – they’re thunderous, strong, independent and feminine.
Her voice is refreshing and unlike her rivals like Little Boots and La Roux – we’re not battling to hear her voice through a barrage of heavy electro-pop sounds.
Let’s put it this way;
- Little Boots, Lady Gaga, La Roux are a cup of PG Tips with three sugars, two sweeteners and far too much milk.
- Florence on the other hand is a clear cup of Darjeeling with a wedge of lemon.
