In The Spotlight – TLGB

You might remember us posting up a dirty Jack Penate remix a while back? TLGB aka The Living Graham Bond is a London based electro/techno producer and DJ with Kissy Sell Out championing his stuff from the start.

Having recently signed to fidget label Venga Digital there’s definitely lots more in store for him in 2009 and we’re behind him all the way.

Now his two high profile remixes are available for your listening pleasure.

TLGB is also launching our new In The Spotlight feature and he’s revealed to The Mahogany Blog the tracks that have influenced him throughout the years.

Here they are!

Michael Jackson -- Rock With You

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

It’s very trendy to list MJ at the moment, but it’s more Quincy Jones I want to big up with this track. It’s flawless pop production; disco claps, string stabs, outrageously camp synth solos and then just when you think you’ve had it all there’s a final chorus key change! The whole album is incredible with it’s smooth disco-latin-perc-pop vibe, I never get tired of it.

Lyle Lovett -- If I Had A Boat

I’ll be honest, I don’t really know what he’s talking about nor do I want to, it’s just a lovely song. It is also my dream to have a boar and a pony.

————————————————————————————————————————————

Notorious B.I.G. -- Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Four minutes of pure flashy hip-hop. Unpretentiously pretentious?

————————————————————————————————————————————

Olive -- You’re Not Alone (TLGB Remix)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

It took me a while to pluck up the courage to do a remix of this because I like it so much, but I think I did exactly what I wanted! Sometimes remixing isn’t about radical ideas, just representation.

————————————————————————————————————————————

Jungle Brothers -- How Ya Want It We Got It (Native Tongues Remix)

From the album Raw Delux, highly underrated and the last true JBs album. The Native Tongues are brilliant and led me to people like Ugly Duckling and People Under The Stairs who are equally innovative

————————————————————————————————————————————

Betty Harris -- Break In The Road

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

I don’t know what the drummer was on when he played this but by-jingo it’s a belter. Rough, raw and full of spunk.

————————————————————————————————————————————

Paul Simon -- Graceland

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

This song and album was the soundtrack to almost every Sunday trip to some sort of archaeological dig/historial reenactment with my parents. I love the organic fusion of cultures, the clever lyrics and most of all the recording style. There are so many lovely echoes, gated reverbs and spacial effects. The percussion really leaps out of the speakers at times and I remember being in a world of my own when I listened to this album whilst sucking on a barley sugar in the backseat.

————————————————————————————————————————————

Calvin Harris -- I’m Not Alone (Burns Rework)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

My favourite track this summer so far. You have to give it to Mr. Harris, he nails it every time and Burns just punctuates it’s best points.

————————————————————————————————————————————

Funky Porcini -- Dubble

There’s something curiously entertaining about samples of English speech from films in electronic music, I sampled Dirk Bogarde recently.

Bon Iver – MySpace Transmissions

Posted on Thursday, July 16, 2009 in Indie/Folk

The Bon Iver performance at The Park in Glastonbury has gone down in my book as the most beautiful gig I’ve ever seen.

I don’t think anything can or will top it for me – what made it was the anticipation. I’ve had the Bon Iver album since it was released and listened to it an unhealthy amount of times so finally hearing it live pulled every string in my body.

MySpace Transmissions invited Justin and the band to record a few songs from For Emma, Forever Ago and the live rendition reveals how pure the sound is. It’s not a studio sound at all. Just pure emotion in every chord and keystroke.

If you ever get a chance to see Bon Iver – prepare to be amazed.

Here are three tracks from the session.

Oh Shit!

Posted on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 in Electro/Dance, Remixes

oh shit!

Oh Shit!

Famous words that we all say at least once a week. Mainly when we pull out the handful of receipts for the night before or when we realise there’s no toilet paper (in a public toilet).

There is an Oh Shit! that is positive however. The words we scream to ourselves when a dirty beat is dropped and that’s what the LA duo set out to achieve. With successful outcomes.

Pushin’ Harder featuring Whiskey Pete is coming out this week exclusively on Beatport and we’ve got some tasty remixes.

We Can Get It On

pugs

About a month ago the DJ Vadim track featuring Pugs Atoms was released and it sent me to memory lane. All my hip-hop heroes like Pharcyde, Souls of Mischief, Pete Rock and others were bought back to fruition by Pugs’ authentic hip-hop sound.

Pugs sent this video to us last week and the minute I listened to it, I loved it. Hopefully he’ll drop an mp3 through so you can have this on the go.

I noticed he’s playing a few dates in Europe but I’m yet to see a London date. He’d be the perfect artist for Cargo or Hoxton Bar & Grill.

Off to New York tomorrow and this is getting me ready.

Check out our DJ Vadim post featuring Pugs Atomz.

Back To The Future?

Posted on Friday, July 10, 2009 in News

back_to_the_future_part_2_1989_685x385

Every now and then it’s important to look back on some of our earlier posts that you may have missed.

Here’s a few personal favourites.

Rare cover of the Gorillaz song Feel Good Inc performed by Editors.

Foals remix by Ewan Pearson – really progessive, really really good.

Collection of High Contrast remixes including Pjanoo!

Work It Out by Esser is a staple track for your mp3 player.

There’s so much music on Mahogany if you dig and dig that’s still fresh so it seems a shame to keep it in the dark.
