Fink’s new project: Sideshow

Posted on Tuesday, May 12, 2009 in Dubstep

Every now and then an artist endeavors in more than one musical project and it works incredibly well.  Fink has already released 2 fantastic albums and is on the verge of his third and almost out of the blue his new side project emerges.

Sideshow delivers beautiful Dub music with hints of Fink’s trademark acoustic sound – the album Admit One is relatively unknown and it’s hardly mentioned by the man himself but the record is almost perfect. Dub is undoubtedly one of the reemerging genres of the past couple of years and hearing innovative new forms of it can’t help but put a smile on my face.

Turn your bass up.

Au Revoir Simone Live At Bush Hall

Last night I went to see New York girls from Au Revoir Simone at Bush Hall in London.

The trendy trio have just released their third album, Still Night Still Light, and they played some sweet new tunes in the small West London venue. Erika, Annie and Heather all play keyboards (they have about five of them on stage). The new songs are slightly moodier than usual, but still quite dancey and kind of hypnotic.

For some reason there were so many French people (including me) attending the show – that’s what you get for picking such a peculiar band name I guess. Anyway, they also played some tracks like Sad Song and Stay Golden which reminded me of the time when I was an innocent Parisian student.

Pass The Dutchie…

The Reggae genre is a strange one for me – I occasionally hear the odd pirate reggae radio station when I’m in the car but apart from that I have no real interest in the modern day genre.

Obviously Damien Marley is the biggest reggae success in the past 10 years but I can’t help to wonder if his career would be different if we removed his historic family tree.

That all changed for me when Natty first surfaced a couple of years ago. He was a massive breath of fresh air during a period where we were all being polluted by the same dull indie bollocks. I wouldn’t call his music reggae directly but rather a massive melting pot of white and black musical influences; the result of growing up with a black Mother and white Father.

His debut album, Man Like I, was the soundtrack to my summer last year and I never tire of it so what better way to prepare for the hot season than with these.

Now We Are Free

gladiator1

Gladiator is hands down one of my all-time favourite films and the music to accompany the film helps capture the incredible atmosphere throughout the movie.

The original score and soundtrack is composed by the legendary Hans Zimmer and sung by Australian Contralto singer Lisa Gerrard. Interestingly enough many of the songs Lisa Gerrard has sung in her career are not sung in any language in-particular; instead she let’s her voice travel with the music and whatever sounds come out is what is recorded. Bon Iver uses a similar technique to this.

The soundtrack won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Academy Award when the film was released in 2000.

We all know the tragic yet triumphant ending of Gladiator set in the epic Colosseum and the last song, Now We Are Free,  is the one that really pulls the heart strings.

Epic film.

Here’s a little clip from the film – definitely going to watch the full thing tonight.

She’s Got Them Mixing

Judging on the success of our last Tommy Sparks post back in April there has been a patient wait for the official remixes to be released and oh boy, this ones a goody. You’re gonna love it.

Remixed by the man himself and a pal called The Fury this is definitely the pick of the bunch – it even reaches past the original in the some respects because the punchy vocals aren’t tampered with at all.

It’s very possible Tommy Sparks could slip through with one single and then disappear ‘a-la Sam Sparro style’ but listening to the snippets of tracks from his new album I think we’re in for a good few months with Tommy.

Check out the new tracks on his MySpace and our last post which features the original.

We’ll post up anything new on Sparks so check back in the near future.

Dub Pistols – Back To Daylight

Dub Pistols are gearing up to release their new album titled Rum & Coke and the first official track to surface is Back To Daylight.

The song features Ashley Slater whose voice provides some easy listening goodness.

Can’t wait to hear this in the open air warmth (fingers crossed) of a festival – surely the DP trumpets and saxophones will make themselves known on this song if performed live.

Just got the video for you – so watch and enjoy

Cat House

Just when you think your favourite band had called it day you realise they’re reborn under a new name and with a new surge of energy. Having seen these guys play a fair share of gigs it was devastating to hear that they were no longer making music as Captain Kidd however it was a lovely surprise when my girlfriend noticed a very similar looking and sounding band online.

Turn On Computer > Type in URL > EP For Sale > Credit Card Out > Purchased.

In my opinion this is one of the top ten bands to watch in 2009 – It’s very much worth listening to their previous form as well to get a real taste for the music.

As you can see there aren’t any download links for this track – if you like as much as I think you will you’ll buy a copy (it’s only £2!).

Who would have thought Essex could produce such talent!
