M.I.A. – Paper Planes (DFA Remix)

slum-dog-millionaire

A.R. Rahman chose the soundtrack for Slumdog Millionaire and boy did he do a good job – two Oscars under his belt for the Score!

The Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack was never given a proper listen through by Mahogany Blog (until now) and earlier today a song grabbed us by the throat and gave us a big wet kiss.

Paper Planes has been worked on by so many people it was getting a little tedious but this DFA remix has brought new life to the song.

bombay-panda

Before you say anything, we’re not blogging about the Indian takeaway restaurant but rather one of the few bands to really look out for over the next few years.

These guys are all under 20 and they’re producing this kind of sound – very exciting.

They’ve posted a new song on their Myspace called Always Like This – listen to it and see what you think. It’s been playing continuously on our speakers all morning.

The Presets – If I Know You

You get a real feel for Depeche Mode with The Preset’s new single.

If I Know You is nowhere near as raw as their last single, This Boy’s In Love, but it’s the kind of song that’s great for the walk to work.

The Australian duo are about to embark on a US tour with The Golden Filter – drop a comment if you’ve managed to get a ticket.

Citizen Cope – Hurricane Waters

Posted on Wednesday, February 25, 2009 in Indie/Folk

trouble-the-water

Trouble The Water is an Oscar-nominated documentary made by a Black couple armed with a video camera struggling to survive during Hurricane Katrina – it’s a shocking and moving documentary which we would recommend to anybody.

Half way through, a montage of the flooded city and it’s stranded residents was shown and during that time a song by Citizen Cope was played.

Citizen Cope has released three albums to date. The most critically acclaimed is The Clarence Greenwood Recordings and although it touches on many of the problems in the United States, it also tries to find a solution.

Coldplay – The Goldrush

Coldplay have received a lot of stick from a lot of people over the years – many people have some serious reserves about Chris Martin & Co but at Mahogany Blog we think Coldplay have regained credibility with their most recent album and the EP’s that followed soon after.

So do we have Brian Eno (Producer) to thank for taking the band in such a new direction and do we finally have a band that can handle their worldwide status properly?

The Goldrush from the Life In Technicolour ii single release is a previously unheard Coldplay song featuring lead vocals by drummer Will Champion – it’s a whole new (slightly risky) direction that we hope can stay.

Fever Ray – When I Grow Up

Sweden is now in the eyes of many a chief export for great music – to add to it’s belt Fever Ray is on the brink of releasing her self-titled debut album.

For a taster she’s dropped her new single slightly early and it’s seriously eerie.

The video is reminiscent of ‘The Ring’ and features Fever Ray standing on the diving board of an isolated swimming pool whilst all sorts of ghostly madness happens under the water.

Her new album will surely be a (niche) hit and we can expect some serious remixes from the single.

The production on this track is unbelievable and you need to see the video.

Friendly Fires – Skeleton Boy

friendly-fires-1

Friendly Fires were arguably one of the most exciting British bands to emerge last year and many people were shocked their self-titled album wasn’t nominated for a Mercury Music Prize.

Anyhow they’re about to release their new single which has been given the single treatment by XL Recordings and it’s gorgeous.

The single version is punchy, funky and all other words that end in a ‘y’.
